Holland America Line has Laid the Keel for ms Nieuw Amsterdam
|
Construction of Holland America Line's new Signature-class premium cruise ship ms Nieuw Amsterdam reached a milestone on March 24 with the keel-laying ceremony at the Fincantieri Marghera shipyard in Italy.
The 2,106-guest ship is scheduled for delivery in late June 2010. Just before laying the keel, the large section of Nieuw Amsterdam that was built at Fincantieri's Sestri yard near Genoa, Italy, was towed around the foot of Italy to Venice. Once it arrived, the section was floated into the building dock and placed on blocks.
The section that signifies the ceremonial keel laying was lifted into the building dock and later joined with the section built in Sestri.
The front section of Holland America Line's ms Nieuw Amsterdam sits in the building dock at Fincantieri's Marghera shipyard near Venice, Italy. The section that was built at Fincantieri's Sestri yard near Genoa was towed around the foot of Italy.
U.S. Government to Lift Some Cuba Travel Restrictions
|
During White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs' Monday briefing he announced several steps that the Obama administration is planning to take to promote greater contact between separated family members in the US and Cuba and increase the flow of money and information to the Cuban people. In making the announcement Gibbs noted that "There are no better ambassadors for freedom than Cuban Americans".
According to the White House, the Obama administration will lift all restrictions on family visits to Cuba including the current limitations on the frequency of visits, the duration of a visit, and the 44 pound limitation on accompanied baggage. In addison the White House announced that it will remove the limitations on the amount of money that can be sent to a relative's family in Cuba in an attempt to increase Cuban's access to resources.
Most of the changes announced today effectively reverse a series of stiffer restrictions that were implemented by the Bush administration in 2004.
One new change specifically developed by the Obama administration authorizes greater telecommunications links with Cuba to help advance interaction between the two countries at no additional cost to the U.S. government. To accomplish this, the administration will authorize U.S. telecommunications network providers to enter into agreements to establish fiber optic cable and satellite facilities connecting the two countries.
When pressed about whether these moves were "...a prelude to further normalization in Cuba?" Gibbs answered "No" and then moved on to a different subject. So, for now, cruise lines and cruise passengers who were hoping that the Obama administration might lift the sanctions that currently prevent U.S.-based cruise ships from calling at Cuban ports will have to continue waiting.
Norwegian Cruise Line Reports Record Results & Net Yield Growth in 2008
|
Norwegian Cruise Line completed a strategic repositioning in 2008, implementing a number of initiatives that have led to record results and improved financial performance even within a challenging economic environment. Highlights from 2008 included the augmentation of its senior management team with both seasoned managers and industry veterans; enhancement of its onboard product with the full implementation of Freestyle 2.0; significant improvement in the way it conducts business with its travel partners through Partnership 2.0; realignment of its Hawaii operations; restructuring of its new build program; and a keen focus on managing and streamlining its cost structure. "The Company achieved record improvements in both EBITDA and Net Yields in 2008 despite an extremely challenging economy," said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line's Chief Executive Officer. "We worked diligently in 2008 to transform the Company with the successful implementation of a variety of measures and initiatives. The result is a new Company, one that is extremely focused on customer service, financial performance and is well poised to come through this difficult period."
Full Year Results Norwegian Cruise Line reported a record setting 18.2% increase in EBITDA1,2, in 2008 of $228.1 million versus $192.9 million in 2007. On a pro forma basis, EBITDA1,2 increased 55.7% to $300.1 million versus the prior year after including the impact of restructuring initiatives such as the re-flagging and redeployment of Pride of Hawaii and Pride of Aloha from NCL's U.S.-flagged fleet to its international fleet as Norwegian Jade and Norwegian Sky, respectively, as well as other cost saving initiatives.
In 2008, net revenues increased 2.9% despite a 3.7% decrease in capacity. Total revenues for 2008 were $2.1 billion versus $2.2 billion in 2007, a 3.2% decrease. Net Yields for 2008 increased 6.9% from the prior year while Gross Yields were modestly higher. Operating income for NCL increased by 46.3% to $65.5 million in 2008 from $44.8 million in 2007, excluding impairment charges in 2008 of $128.8 million related to the cancellation of a contract to build a ship and $2.6 million in 2007 related to the sale of Oceanic. Excluding these one-time charges, NCL reported a net loss of $83.0 million for its year ended December 31, 2008, as compared to a net loss of $224.4 million for the prior year. Results for the year ended December 31, 2008 include a non-cash foreign exchange translation gain of $101.8 million primarily related to marking-to-market NCL's Euro denominated debt, offset by $99.9 million of losses due to the change in fair value of our derivative contracts. NCL reported a non-cash foreign exchange translation loss of $94.5 million for the same period in 2007. Interest expense (net of capitalized interest), decreased by $23.0 million year-over-year as a result of lower average outstanding debt balances for the year.
Outlook In the first few months of 2009, NCL experienced strong bookings with a rise of 15% year-over-year through March 15, 2009. In addition, the new Groups 2.0 program, launched in December, saw a threefold increase in group staterooms blocked compared to the same time last year. In 2009, NCL said that it will return the last of its older chartered ships (Norwegian Majesty) to Star Cruises, completing the transformation of its fleet to 100% modern ships purpose-built for Freestyle Cruising. NCL said that it is eagerly anticipating the arrival of its next generation of Freestyle Cruising ship, Norwegian Epic, scheduled for delivery in May 2010. The arrival of Norwegian Epic represents the next step in this exciting evolution of NCL's fleet. NCL announced further details about the ship's wide range of accommodations on March 18, 2009, the innovative dining and amenities on April 3, 2009 and will reveal information about the entertainment on May 20, 2009. NCL will also open Norwegian Epic's 2010 itineraries for sale to the public on May 20, 2009.
In recent months, the Company had been exploring alternatives to optimize its capital structure. In conjunction with an equity investment by its shareholders of $100 million, the Company has refinanced approximately $800 million of debt that it had coming due in 2009 and 2010.
"This is an extremely exciting time for Norwegian Cruise Line. We've transformed the Company, improved our financial performance, negotiated new lender terms and received additional financial support from our shareholders," added Sheehan. "In addition, we've just received in depth broadcast coverage with the premiere of the much anticipated CNBC/Peter Greenberg documentary which showcases Norwegian Cruise Line to a large, international viewing audience. All of these elements are helping us to weather this challenging climate."
Cunard Line Announces 2010-2011 Itineraries
|
Building on the announcement of Cunard Line's inaugural season for Queen Elizabeth, Cunard announced the Europe, Transatlantics and Americas 2010-2011 programme for Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria. The year 2010 will herald another important milestone for Cunard: once again the company will have three Queens sail under the line's flag. According to Cunard, with the youngest fleet in the industry, guests will experience a new golden age of ocean travel in contemporary surroundings backed by the classic traditions of legendary White Star Service for which the line is renowned.
"Our heritage is highly regarded by our guests, with up to 97% saying they will recommend Cunard to a friend and 98% saying they will return," said Carol Marlow, president of Cunard Line. "In appreciation of their loyalty, we are pleased to offer a wider range of itineraries in 2010 - a direct result of our expanded fleet of modern luxury vessels."
Queen Mary 2 - Queen Mary 2 will continue her reign on the Atlantic in 2010 with 21 Transatlantic Crossings including between New York and Southampton, Cherbourg or Hamburg, providing guests time to experience the multitude of onboard activities such as enjoying a lecture through the Cunard Insights programme, discovering one of the 8,000 volumes in the Library, dancing nightly to an live orchestra in the Queens Room, viewing all of the cosmic journey offerings in the only planetarium at sea and honing their dramatic arts skills in a RADA workshop, to name a few.
There will also be more "Grand" voyages roundtrip from New York whereby guests can combine two Transatlantic Crossings with a Mediterranean, Northern Europe and for the first time, a short Getaway voyage in Europe. In the summer of 2010, Queen Mary 2 will also offer five voyages to Northern Europe from Southampton and Hamburg, including maiden calls to the North Cape and Tromso in Norway. After her short Getaway for the July 4th holiday, she returns to New York in fall 2010 for a season of voyages in the Americas, including two explorations of Canada and New England and five Caribbean voyages departing roundtrip from New York.
Queen Victoria - Queen Victoria begins her 2010 season in Southampton for a series of voyages to Iberia, Northern Europe, Norwegian Fjords, the Baltic and the Mediterranean, in addition to her first sailing around the British Isles. After repositioning to Venice, she will begin a series of "open jaw" sailings between this jewel of the Adriatic and Rome or Barcelona. Many of these sailings will feature overnight stays in popular destinations like Venice, Istanbul and Barcelona.
The ship then returns to Southampton and across the Atlantic to start a new Americas season in 2011. Queen Victoria's American journey begins with a 17-day voyage from New York to Los Angeles through the magnificent Panama Canal. From the City of Angels, she will embark on two 14-day voyages to Hawaii, including a maiden call at Nawiliwili (Kauai), and her first west coast 4-day Getaway voyage to Mexico. After another full transit of the Canal from Los Angeles to Fort Lauderdale, Queen Victoria will offer an 11-day Panama Canal voyage roundtrip from Ft. Lauderdale before heading back across the Atlantic on a 16-day voyage that will take in the US east coast, Lisbon and Cobh.

New Dining Options for Kids
Royal Caribbean International has enhanced the cruise line's dining experience to further cater to parents and children for a more enjoyable cruise vacation all around. My Family Time Dining aims to help kids complete dinner within 45 minutes, freeing parents to enjoy coffee and desert at their leisure. Once seated, kids will enjoy expedited service and be immediately served. Available only during the first seating in the main dining room, kids registered in the complimentary Adventure Ocean youth program and My Family Time Dining will be met by Adventure Ocean counselors at the main dining room entrances at 6:45 p.m. and be escorted back to the Adventure Ocean spaces for ongoing evening activities, while parents can continue to enjoy their dinner.
Expanding on the cruise line's focus to provide healthier onboard dining experiences, Royal Caribbean's new children's menu will include Vitality options and be presented on playful, brain-teasing placemats designed by Fisher-Price for kids up to age seven, and a more mature interactive menu for kids age 8 -13. My Family Time Dining and children's menu options will be available fleetwide in July 2009.
Lunchtime, also, no longer means a break from the fun for kids. Available immediately, Royal Caribbean's Lunch and Play option provides children, ages 3 - 11, a nutritious meal with their new friends in the middle of the day on days at sea. For a service charge of $7.95 per child, Lunch and Play provides Adventure Ocean kids with lunch, movies, cartoons and play time between noon and 2 p.m. under the supervision of Adventure Ocean counselors. New Royal Babies and Royal Tots Programming
New programs for Royal Babies (ages 6 - 18 months) and Royal Tots (ages 18 - 36 months) will provide a wider breadth of activities and services to guests sailing with young children, adding to the already popular Fisher-Price playgroup program. Parents traveling with infants and toddlers can now pack lighter for their cruise with Royal Caribbean's Babies 2 Go program, where parents can order organic baby food and diapers, wipes and creams by Huggies - the world's leading diaper brand - for delivery to their staterooms upon their arrival. These baby essentials can be ordered online through Royal Caribbean's Gifts & Gear section at RoyalCaribbean.com starting March 23.
In the mornings, Stroll & Roll will dedicate the jogging track to guests with infants in strollers, where parents and infants can continue their exercise regimen together. During the day, Royal Tots can create early childhood memories at four new Crayola Beginnings workshops. During each 45-minute session, parents and their children enjoy story-time with an Adventure Ocean counselor, and use Crayola Beginnings products to create the toddler's first works of art. Themed sessions include My Colorful World (introducing the concept of colors); Families Have Fun (introducing the world of coloring); Let's Explore the Sea; and Our Big, Big Ship.
A treasure chest of Fisher-Price toys is available to families during their stay in the Fisher-Price Toy Lending Program, comprising a collection of developmental toys specifically created for infants and toddlers, ages 6 - 36 months. Parents can enjoy a little time away from their children with complete peace of mind through Royal Caribbean's Sitters at Sea, created by Fisher-Price - an in-stateroom babysitting service for guests with infants, one year old and above. A Royal Caribbean staff-member will arrive equipped with Fisher-Price toys and Mattel games, and engage and entertain the young cruisers until their parents return. Parents will need to reserve a sitter at least 24 hours in advance and complete a checklist that includes information on where they will be, when they expect to return, bedtime routines and particular preferences for each child. Upon their return, parents will be presented a log of the child's activities with the babysitter, including books read, games enjoyed, food consumed, and when the child was put to bed. Service charges for Sitters at Sea are $10 per hour for up to two children; and $15 per hour for 3 or more children.
Children also can create a personalized plush toy souvenir with their parents in a fun activity with Royal Caribbean's new Pets at Sea. Royal Caribbean is currently the only cruise line with dedicated teen spaces aboard every ship across the fleet. Onboard areas such as The Living Room teen hangout, Fuel or Optix teen discos, and The Back Deck sun-deck for teens give young cruisers ages 12 - 17 their own space to create new friendships and relax with their peers. Younger cruisers, ages 3 - 11, have scheduled and supervised activities all day long in three age-tiered curricula: Aquanauts, ages 3 - 5; Explorers, ages 6 - 8; and Voyagers, ages 9 - 11. All Adventure Ocean counselors are college graduates, with a degree in education, recreation or a related field.
Celebrity Solstice Earns Design Recognition from IIDA
|
"Dazzling," "stunning," and "in a word, wow," are among the praises Celebrity Solstice has received from members of the press since the ship launched in November 2008, and its hip style and design is receiving similar recognition from the architecture and design community.
The prestigious International Interior Design Association (IIDA) put Celebrity Solstice front and center in an installment of its "Pioneering Design Lecture Series" in New York focusing on influential professionals in the hospitality, fashion, and theater arts design arena.
Among the designers invited to participate were noted hospitality designer Adam D. Tihany, who created Celebrity Solstice's Grand Epernay main restaurant with gleaming crystal wine tower, the inviting, casual Oceanview Café and Bar, and the Napa Valley-inspired Tuscan Grille steakhouse; Francesca Bucci and Hans Galutera of BG Studio International, who led the design of Celebrity Solstice's elegant "Murano" specialty restaurant and four of the ship's chic bars and lounges; and Celebrity Cruises' AVP of Newbuilding & Design Kelly Gonzalez, whose team headed up the design of the ship's Mediterranean-influenced "Blu" specialty restaurant. Each participated in a panel discussion about the history of ocean liner design, which evolved to how "Celebrity's Solstice Class has become the new benchmark in the industry," according to the IIDA New York Chapter.

NCL Releases More Norwegian Epic Details
|
Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) this week revealed another industry first to debut on its next generation of Freestyle Cruising ship, Norwegian Epic, which will include an expansive Aqua Park with the only tube slide and largest bowl slide at sea -- The Epic Plunge. The line also unveiled seven decks of Freestyle Family Fun with highlights including a 33-foot high, 64-foot wide extreme rock climbing wall and the first ever rappelling wall at sea; the most bowling lanes at sea with six in two venues; a mixed-use sports deck with the ability for guests to engage in eight different athletic activities; as well as three separate kids' and teen activity areas and the first squash court at sea. In addition, Norwegian revealed the next generation of Freestyle Dining with 14 restaurant choices - the most at sea - and 18 bars and lounges.
"From the Aqua Park to the expanded sports deck and largest Kid's Crew facility to the most dining outlets at sea, Norwegian Epic is truly taking Freestyle Cruising to the next level by offering our guests so many choices in dining and on-board activities," said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line's chief executive officer. "Our largest Freestyle Cruising vessel to date represents the culmination of our 43 years of innovation in the cruise industry. Norwegian Epic will delight and amaze our guests."
Norwegian Epic, set for delivery in late May 2010, takes Freestyle Family Fun to the extreme with an expansive Aqua Park that includes three water slides of varying thrill factors, including one specifically designed for children that zips straight through the rock climbing wall; a more adventurous slide twisting and turning down three stories; and The Epic Plunge, the only tube slide at sea that puts the blast of inner-tubing into the core of a bowl slide with a thrilling drop through a 200-foot long tube. In the evening, Entourage transitions into a hip nightclub with a space for dancing or just hanging out on comfy couches. Directly below is the video arcade which features number of the most challenging and interactive video games.
Norwegian Epic's wide range of dining choices will wow even the most discerning cruiser with 14 Freestyle Dining restaurants and 18 bars and lounges. Each restaurant features unique and sensational culinary delights from around the world.
Norwegian Epic's dining establishments will include:
• Taste: Located in the ship's atrium on Deck 5, Taste's décor blends off-white, free-form plastered walls with European retro-chic mixed with brick details and floor to ceiling velvet curtains. Taste will serve a selection of traditional and contemporary cuisine.
• The Manhattan Room: Reminiscent of an elegant art deco supper club, The Manhattan Room features a dance floor as its focal point and will offer live music and dancing in the evening. The two-story high restaurant on Deck 6 features floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows looking aft. The cuisine reflects the elegant and romantic nature of the room.
• Café Jardin & The Great Outdoors: Café Jardin's décor is modeled after a traditional English country garden conservatory. This is Norwegian's signature action station casual restaurant where chefs cook fresh, prepared-to-order food as guests watch, featuring seafood, pizza, fruit, soups, pasta, ethnic specialties, burgers and desserts; offering extensive and varied selections. The Café includes a Kid's Café with child-friendly seats and tables. At the Great Outdoors, guests can enjoy fresh air and a view of the Aqua Park with their meal.
• Cagney's Steakhouse & Churrascaria: Norwegian's traditional American steakhouse takes on a new twist with the addition of Argentinean churrasco. In addition to mouth-watering steaks, guests will be able to sample a variety of skewered meats presented by tableside passadors. Another new addition is a large, centrally located salad bar.
• La Cucina: This Tuscan-style eatery will serve regional Italian specialties including pizza, pasta and steak, chicken and fish dishes. The traditional Italian décor reflects two distinct areas: a Tuscan farm home and an Italian courtyard, where a large olive tree with hanging lanterns is the centerpiece, open to Café Jardin above.
• Le Bistro: Norwegian's upscale bistro will serve classic French cuisine with an American flair. This elegant dining establishment surrounds guests with contemporary and traditional paintings and sculptures, making guests feel as if they were dining in an art museum.
• Shanghai's: This new addition to Norwegian's specialty dining options will serve a delicious mix of Chinese dishes and noodle bar specialties. The décor reflects Old Shanghai in the 1930s and is reminiscent of the China Club in Hong Kong. There will be an open kitchen preparing traditional Chinese cuisine, noodles, wok fried dishes and dim sum.
• Wasabi: This expansive sushi and sake bar will serve the freshest sushi, sashimi and Japanese Yakitori dishes. Featuring modern décor and clean lines, Wasabi is located outside the Teppanyaki restaurant.
• Teppanyaki: As the largest Teppanyaki restaurant at sea with 115 seats, this expanded restaurant will feature up to 24 knife-wielding chefs cooking exhibition-style Japanese cuisine on flat top grills. Guests will be amazed by the masterful chefs who demonstrate their skills slicing and dicing while creating an appetizing meal.
• O'Sheehan's Neighborhood Bar & Grill: This classic neighborhood sports bar and restaurant will serve American favorites and comfort food and is open 24 hours. The atrium's two-story high screen will be visible from inside the restaurant and additional flat screen televisions will show sporting events, while guests enjoy their own activities, including three lanes of bowling, dart boards, pool tables, foosball and arcade games.
• The Epic Club and Courtyard Grill: Located high atop the ship in The Villas complex, this modern and elegant restaurant is reserved exclusively for Norwegian Epic's suite and villa guests. The décor reflects a private club ambiance with contemporary and modern furnishings, and a large wine display, dotted with glass sculptures and pearl drapes. The Courtyard Grill is the more casual, outdoor area of the restaurant serving Villas guests for breakfast and lunch.
• To Be Announced: In addition to the above, there is also one more Norwegian Epic restaurant which will be announced at the next reveal in May.
Also, 24-hour room service will be available for all guests on board Norwegian Epic.
Throughout the ship, there will also be a total of 18 bars and lounges, which include: Atrium Bar; O'Sheehan's; Cascades, the casino bar; Bliss Ultra Lounge; Cagney's Bar; the Ice Bar; Sake Bar; Malting's Whiskey Bar; Shaker's Martini Bar; Humidor Cigar Lounge; The Living Room, exclusively for The Studios' guests; Waves Bar; Spice H20; the Epic Club; and Posh Beach Club. The final three bars will be announced in May.
Carnival Splendor Launches Year-Round Mexican Riviera Service From Long Beach
|
Carnival Cruise Lines' 3,006-passenger Carnival Splendor - the line's newest and largest ship offering a host of innovations - embarked yesterday on its inaugural seven-day Mexican Riviera cruise from Long Beach, Calif., building upon the company's distinction as California's number one cruise operator.
On its new schedule, Carnival Splendor departs the Long Beach Cruise Terminal every Sunday on weeklong voyages to Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas.
Including Carnival Splendor, the company operates four ships from the West Coast which collectively will carry a record 620,000 guests annually from California ports - more than any other cruise line.
In anticipation of the Carnival Splendor's arrival, the Long Beach Cruise Terminal, owned and operated by Carnival's parent company Carnival Corporation & plc since 2003, has undergone an $8 million upgrade.
Based on information collected by the Office of Economic Research at California State University, Carnival Cruise Lines' Long Beach operations have a significant impact on the local economy, with $82.4 million in direct expenditures generating an employment impact of 525 jobs with an annual payroll of $18.2 million. The arrival of Carnival Splendor is expected to generate an additional $14 million in direct annual expenditures - this impact will be immediate.
"Carnival has earned its distinction as the West Coast's number one cruise operator by offering fun, affordable vacations from two convenient homeports and Carnival Splendor - with its many innovations and features - provides guests with yet another exciting choice for Southern California cruising," said Ruben Rodriguez, Carnival's executive vice president of marketing and guest experience. "We are also very pleased with the renovations to the Long Beach Cruise Terminal, which provides our guests with a comfortable, state-of-the-art venue for embarking and debarking on their cruise," he added.
Steve Goodling, president & CEO of the Long Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau, said, "The size, capacity and appeal of the Carnival Splendor will give us the opportunity to showcase the revitalization of Long Beach and our beautiful skyline to the many thousands of passengers who will set sail on this incredible ship. We believe that this experience will generate repeat visits by many of these passengers."
A new class of vessel for the line, the 113,300-ton Carnival Splendor offers a wide range of on-board facilities and features, highlighted by a two-level 21,000-square foot health spa - the largest in the fleet - featuring a thalassotherapy pool, an elaborate thermal suite and 17 private treatment rooms. Adjacent to the facility are 68 spa staterooms and suites - a first for Carnival.
Carnival Splendor also offers the most elaborate children's facilities of any "Fun Ship," including a 5,500-square-foot children's play area - the largest in the fleet - along with a water spray park and dedicated facilities for 'tweens and teens. Also featured on Lido Deck is Carnival's Seaside Theatre, a massive 270-square-foot LED screen displaying movies, concerts, and other programming.
Dining options include four restaurants - two two-level main dining rooms, a 1,400-seat casual poolside eatery featuring a 24-hour pizzeria, and an elegant reservations-only restaurant. Rounding out the Carnival Splendor's many diverse features are 22 lounges and bars, a duty-free shopping mall, full casino gambling, and ship-wide Internet access and cell phone service.
Celebrity Equinox To Make Stateside Debut With Four Night 'Sampler'
|
An equinox occurs twice a year, but the opportunity to experience a special four-night cruise on Celebrity Cruises' new Celebrity Equinox will occur only once.
On the heels of her eagerly awaited inaugural season in Europe this year, Celebrity Equinox will arrive in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., November 19, to welcome guests with reservations on the special four-night sailing, which is now open for booking.
"The response Celebrity Solstice has received from the press, our guests and our travel partners since she launched in November has exceeded even our own high expectations," said Celebrity Cruises President & CEO Dan Hanrahan. "We're confident Celebrity Equinox will meet with equally glowing reviews, and think there's no better way to introduce her in the U.S. than with a four-night Solstice Class sampler."
With three tranquil days and nights at sea and a day in one of the most popular ports in the Caribbean -- Cozumel, Mexico -- the special itinerary offers ample time for guests to experience the series of brand-defining, industry-first attributes associated with Celebrity Solstice, including a half-acre Lawn Club with real grass, a glassblowing show and studio developed with The Corning Museum of Glass, unrivaled dining venues offering trendsetting cuisine and design, and widely varied entertainment, including spectacular new shows in partnership with Poet Theatricals. Princess to Offer New Three-Day Sampler Sailings Aboard Ruby Princess
|
Princess has added two new sampler sailings aboard the new Ruby Princess, offering passengers an opportunity to escape from the holiday hustle and bustle with three-day cruises from Fort Lauderdale.
Departing on Monday, December 14 and Thursday, December 17, 2009, the new getaways each offer a call at the line's private island, Princess Cays -- an exclusive beach resort offering a day of relaxation and water sports. The sailings replace a previously scheduled wetdock.
"We were able to cancel an unnecessary maintenance period scheduled for Ruby Princess and turn it into a great opportunity for passengers to try our newest ship," said Jan Swartz, Princess executive vice president. "These sampler sailings are a rare opportunity to experience the Princess product on a quick getaway. We think our passengers will appreciate the great value of these mini cruises, plus the chance to escape just before the busy holiday period."

The ship offers many other Princess innovations including the relaxing adults-only oasis called The Sanctuary, the poolside Movies Under the Stars experience, and a unique behind-the-scenes option called the Ultimate Ship Tour.
Queen Elizabeth Maiden Voyage Sells Out Faster Than QE2 Final Voyage
|
The October 2010 Maiden Voyage for Cunard's new ocean liner Queen Elizabeth, which was placed on worldwide sale to past guests at 8:00 a.m. today, sold out in 29 minutes - easily making this the fastest selling voyage in Cunard's 170-year history.
In fact, this voyage sold out quicker and involved more guests than QE2's Final Voyage when it set a previous Cunard sell-out record of 36 minutes in June 2007.
More than half of Queen Elizabeth's remaining maiden season, comprising six voyages from October to December 2010, was sold within the first two hours.
"This is an impressive record set by what will be an impressive ship and speaks volumes for the Cunard brand as well as for the resilience of the cruise sector as a whole in these challenging times," said Carol Marlow, president and managing director of Cunard Line. "It has also been very encouraging to see the level of interest in Queen Elizabeth coming from all our international markets, with bookings in the UK, US and Germany particularly strong. I urge our travel partners and those guests who have not yet booked to move fast in order to secure their place in history on Queen Elizabeth during her maiden season."
Travel Agents Optimistic About 2009 Cruise Sales
|
According to a just-completed survey by Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), America's travel agents remain optimistic about cruise sales despite lingering economic uncertainty. Focusing on this year's Wave Season, the period between January and March when cruise vacations show heavy bookings, the online survey drew more than 1,000 responses. Results largely confirmed cruise lines' positive outlook that the industry is well positioned to weather the economic storm and will continue to see growth.
"Given the exceptional economic environment we find ourselves in, these survey results should be taken as good news," said Terry Dale, CLIA's president and CEO. "They show every indication that consumers are responding to the value offered by cruise vacations and to the many incentives offered by CLIA member cruise lines. What is particularly significant is that travel agents are relatively optimistic not only about cruise booking volumes but about revenues in 2009 as well. This suggests that they believe the industry's pricing and marketing strategies will compensate for and even overcome the conditions that have lowered consumer confidence in other business sectors, such as retail and residential real estate."
The CLIA survey found that a majority of agents were optimistic that overall 2009 will be the same or better in terms of cruise bookings and revenue. A majority also reported good, very good or excellent bookings during this year's Wave Season. The results also suggest that booking patterns may be quickly returning to the industry norm and that, although lower priced cruises represent the majority of sales, travelers also show signs of willingness to spend.
A summary of survey findings follows:
• Among respondents, 66.2 percent of agents predicted that overall cruise revenues for 2009 will be the same or better than 2008; almost 30 percent (29.6) expected somewhat better revenues this year;
• 69.2 percent of agents expected overall bookings this year to be the same or better, with 31.1 percent expecting somewhat better bookings in 2009;
• Among the top motivating factors for consumers in 2009 for booking a cruise vacation will be: special offers (32.7 percent), good pricing (29.4 percent) and good value (23 percent);
• Agents reported that the top reasons their clientele would book cruises during Wave Season 2009 would be: good value (40 percent); special pricing (28 percent), and love of cruises (11.1 percent);
• During this year's Wave Season, 54.3 percent of agents said booking activity was good, very good or excellent; 48.7 percent found total booking revenues during the same period to be good, very good or
excellent;
• 56 percent of agents expected booking volume increases when compared to Wave Season 2008; 53.8 percent expected increases in revenues over the same period last year;
• For 60.9 percent of respondents, consumers were booking cruises three to seven months ahead, with a third of agents reporting a three to four month booking window. This is in contrast to a few months ago when consumers responded to the economic crisis by booking at the last minute;
• For 24.5 percent of agents, the average price of cruises sold was $1,000-$1,500 during Wave Season; for 23.2 percent of respondents, the average price was $751-999; only 7.6 percent reported average prices of cruises sold to be less than $500;
• For 60 percent of agents, the typical length of cruise sold remained seven days, which has been the industry average consistently; 21.2 percent of agents said their average cruise length sale was 4-6 days.

Carnival Profits Up, Forecast Lowered
|
Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK) reported net income of $260 million, or $0.33 diluted EPS, on revenues of $2.9 billion for its first quarter ended February 28, 2009. Net income for the first quarter of 2008 was $236 million, or $0.30 diluted EPS, on revenues of $3.2 billion.
Carnival Corporation & plc Chairman and CEO Micky Arison indicated that operating results in the first quarter were better than Carnival's December guidance due primarily to lower than expected net cruise costs and stronger than expected net revenue yields on close-in bookings.
Commenting on first quarter results, Arison said that "considering the economic climate, achieving higher quarterly net income is quite remarkable. The effect of lower revenue yields resulting from the pull back by the consumer was offset by the fall in fuel prices from prior year levels. Our continued focus on cost controls also played a meaningful role in our ability to achieve such positive results."
Key metrics for the first quarter of 2009 compared to the prior year were as follows:
• On a constant dollar basis net revenue yields (revenue per available lower berth day) decreased 5.2 percent for Q1 2009. Net revenue yields in current dollars decreased 11.1 percent due to unfavorable currency exchange rates. Gross revenue yields decreased 11.2 percent.
• Excluding fuel, net cruise cost per available lower berth day ("ALBD") for Q1 2009 was 1.4 percent higher on a constant dollar basis due to higher dry-dock costs.
• Including fuel, net cruise costs per ALBD decreased 9.2 percent on a constant dollar basis (decreased 14.5 percent in current dollars). Gross cruise costs per ALBD decreased 13.8 percent.
• Fuel price decreased 45 percent to $276 per metric ton for Q1 2009 from $499 per metric ton in Q1 2008 and was slightly below the December guidance of $295 per metric ton.
Since the start of the calendar year, booking volumes for the remaining three quarters are running 10 percent ahead of the prior year but at significantly lower prices. At this time, cumulative advance bookings for the remainder of the year are still behind last year's levels as the booking curve has moved closer to sailing date. Ticket prices for these bookings are also at substantially lower levels.
Arison noted "it has been a solid wave season thus far, despite the challenging economic environment, with several of our brands achieving record booking volumes. As we had anticipated, people continue to book cruise vacations while seeking the best possible value. Our brands have responded with a variety of pricing initiatives designed to provide our guests with the most value for their vacation dollars. Though pricing is down significantly we continue to fill our ships by reaching people who might not have otherwise considered a cruise vacation."
"As we look forward in 2009, we remain confident that the fundamental long-term drivers of our business remain intact. To enable us to overcome challenges in these difficult times, we have focused on maintaining tight cost controls and a strong liquidity position. The discipline instilled in our cost conscious culture is a particular advantage as our cost containment initiatives continue to mitigate the pressure on revenue yields," Arison added.
Carnival has sixteen ships under construction to be delivered through 2012 at a cost of $9 billion, the majority of which is expected to be funded by cash from operations. Cash from operations, committed financing facilities and available cash are forecasted to be sufficient to fund Carnival's cash requirements for 2009. Although Carnival said that it will not need to obtain new financing for 2009, it will continue to look for low cost opportunities to enhance its liquidity. At the end of the first quarter Carnival said that it had $3.7 billion of liquidity, which includes $1.8 billion of available cash and undrawn credit lines, as well as $1.9 billion of committed ship financing facilities. In addition, Carnival continues to have the highest credit rating in the leisure industry.
Carnival said that it expects full year net revenue yields, on a constant dollar basis, to decrease 10 to 12 percent compared to 6 to 10 percent in the company's December guidance as a result of the further deterioration in the U.S. and European economies. Carnival said that it now forecasts a 16 to 18 percent decline in net revenue yields on a current dollar basis for the full year 2009 compared to 2008 caused by the weakening of foreign currencies against the U.S. dollar.
Carnival said that it expects net cruise costs excluding fuel for the full year 2009 to be in line with the prior year on a constant dollar basis compared to an increase of 2 percent in its December guidance.
Since the December guidance, the movement in currency exchange rates has largely been offset by the continued decline in fuel prices. Carnival's revised 2009 guidance is based on current spot prices for fuel of $280 per metric ton and currency exchange rates of $1.36 to the euro and $1.44 to sterling.
Taking all the above factors into consideration, Carnival said that it now forecasts full year 2009 earnings per share to be in the range of $2.10 to $2.30, compared to its previous guidance range of $2.25 to $2.75.
Second quarter constant dollar net revenue yields are expected to decline in the 8 to 10 percent range (down 15 to 17 percent on a current dollar basis). Net cruise costs excluding fuel for the second quarter are expected to be approximately 4 percent higher on a constant dollar basis due in part to the timing of certain expenses, including advertising, dry-dock and repairs and maintenance.
Based on current fuel prices and currency exchange rates, Carnival said that it expects earnings for the second quarter of 2009 to be in the range of $0.30 to $0.32 per share, down from $0.49 per share in 2008.
During the second quarter three new ships will debut in Europe- AIDA Cruises' 2,050-passenger AIDAluna and Costa Cruises' 2,260-passenger Costa Luminosa and the 2,990-passenger Costa Pacifica.
Royal Caribbean Announces Allure of the Seas' Inaugural Season
|
Royal Caribbean International this week announced the inaugural season of Allure of the Seas, 42 sailings to the Eastern and Western Caribbean on seven-night voyages every Sunday beginning December 12, 2010. Allure of the Seas, and sister-ship Oasis of the Seas, constitute the Oasis class of ships and will be the world's two largest cruise ships when they debut in November 2010 and 2009, respectively. With the arrival of Allure of the Seas, vacationers will have a choice of a Saturday (Oasis of the Seas) and Sunday departure for an Oasis-class cruise vacation. Bookings for Allure of the Seas' inaugural season will open on April 2, 2009 for Diamond and Diamond Plus level members of the Crown & Anchor Society and April 8 for all Crown & Anchor Society members. General bookings will open on and April 13.
"Through the last four decades, Royal Caribbean has earned a history of innovation and redefined cruising with each new class of ships we launched," said Adam Goldstein, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. "Allure of the Seas and sister-ship Oasis of the Seas represent the ultimate expression of our vision and determination to provide an experience unlike anything found on land and sea. With Allure of the Seas, we will offer family and adventurous vacationers two spectacular ships from which to choose for an unforgettable cruise."
Allure of the Seas will depart from her homeport of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale and alternate a seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itinerary. Both itineraries will feature three days at sea for guests to enjoy all the revolutionary onboard amenities found in the seven "neighborhoods" that comprise an Oasis-class ship. On the Eastern Caribbean itinerary, Allure of the Seas will call at St. Thomas (Charlotte Amalie), St. Maarten (Philipsburg), and Nassau, Bahamas. The ship will call at Falmouth, Jamaica; Cozumel, Mexico; and Labadee, Royal Caribbean's private beach paradise on the northern coast of Haiti, for the Western Caribbean itinerary.
Architectural marvels at sea, Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas will span 16 decks, encompass 220,000 gross registered tons (GRT), and host 5,400 guests at double occupancy with 2,700 staterooms.
Each ship will feature the cruise line's new neighborhood concept, seven themed areas throughout the ship that offer different experiences for guests to choose, based on their personal styles, preferences or moods. Inspired by seaside entertainment esplanades, Boardwalk will engage the entire family - whether young or young at heart - with eateries, retail outlets, carnival games, and an original, handcrafted carousel - a first at sea. Nine decks above, the first zip-line at sea will whisk guests from end to end on a thrilling aerial adventure. Boardwalk will lead to the AquaTheater at the stern of the ship, where the amphitheater - another first at sea - will offer a guest pool area by day and a performance venue at night, featuring dramatic acrobatics, synchronized swimming, water ballet, professional high-diving, and elaborate fountain shows synchronized to music and lights.
Enhancements to the cruise line's signature Royal Promenade, the heart of the ship, will include a mezzanine level that overlooks the main promenade below. Natural light will cascade into the Royal Promenade through the overhead Crystal Canopy sculptured-glass domes, and illuminate the boulevard of boutiques, restaurants, bars and entertainment lounges. The Rising Tide bar, the first moving bar at sea, will offer guests the opportunity to enjoy a cocktail as it slowly ascends into Central Park, the neighborhood above.
Central Park, a revolutionary design in which the center of the ship opens to the sky, will feature lush, tropical grounds spanning the length of a football field. With its serene pathways, seasonal flower gardens and canopy trees, Central Park will evolve from a tranquil and peaceful atmosphere during the day to a gathering space for alfresco dining and entertainment in the evenings.
The Pool and Sports Zone will feature a sloped-entry beach pool (exclusive to the Oasis-class) and two larger FlowRider surf simulators. Building on the Royal Caribbean's popular Vitality wellness program, guests will be able to soothe mind, body and soul in the Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center, which also includes a dedicated spa area just for teens. Entertainment Place will include the cruise line's signature after-dark spaces in more intimate venues that offer a variety of entertainment options. And the Youth Zone will offer a wealth of kid- and teen-friendly adventures, featuring the cruise line's first nursery for infants and toddlers (six months or older).
Carnival Adds New Four- and Five-Day Cruises From San Diego
|
A new four- and five-day cruise option featuring day-long calls at Cabo San Lucas will be added to the Carnival Elation's existing schedule from San Diego in July 2009, complementing the ship's popular three- and four-day Baja program.
Carnival Elation – which emerged from a multi-million-dollar renovation last week with a host of new features — will operate the West Coast's only three-, four- and five-day schedule, expanding upon the line's industry-leading short cruise offerings. Roughly half of the "Fun Ship" fleet offers voyages of five days or less in length.
On its new schedule, Carnival Elation will operate a year-round series of four- and five-day cruises for a two-week period followed by another two weeks of three- and four-day Baja departures.
Beginning July 2, 2009, Carnival Elation's four-day "long weekend" cruises will depart Thursdays and visit Cabo San Lucas. Two different five-day itineraries will also be offered. Five-day cruises departing Saturdays will feature the industry's only itinerary that includes two full days in Cabo San Lucas, providing guests with a unique opportunity to enjoy one of Mexico's most spectacular destinations. Five-day cruises departing Mondays will feature both Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada.
The Carnival Elation's three- and four-day cruises which currently depart on Thursdays and Sundays, respectively, will be changed to Fridays (three-day cruises) and Mondays (four-day cruises) starting with the July 20, 2009, four-day departure. These new departure dates offer guests an even more convenient option on these popular short cruise itineraries from San Diego.
The 70,000-ton Carnival Elation – the only cruise ship operating year-round from San Diego – offers a host of new facilities and features following an extensive renovation, as part of the line's product enhancement program for its eight 70,000-ton Fantasy-class vessels.
Carnival Elation's refurbishment included the addition of Serenity, an exclusive adults-only retreat, a new Circle "C" club geared to 12- to 14-year-olds, and expanded Lido-area dining options, including a new Mongolian Wok custom stir-fry station and an updated deli and dessert station. The Carnival Ecstasy's suites were also remodeled and cosmetic enhancements were made to a variety of shipboard areas.
These features complement the ship's myriad resort-style amenities, including 12 lounges and bars, three restaurants, four swimming pools, a 115-foot-long water slide, a 12,000-square-foot health and fitness center, an Internet café, and ship-wide Wi-Fi access.

Disney Cruise Line announced today that it plans to reposition the Disney Wonder from its Florida base in Port Canaveral to the West Coast in 2011. The company is working with the Port of Los Angeles to finalize a two-year agreement with a three-year extension option. The contract will be considered by the Port of Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners on April 2, 2009.
If approved, the new Disney Wonder sailings could generate more than 250,000 guests passing through the Port of Los Angeles over a five-year period. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said he is pleased to welcome the renowned family cruise line back to the Port of Los Angeles at San Pedro.
"Having Disney Cruise Line operating out of the Port of Los Angeles will provide a great boost to the local economy by generating business and tourism revenue in San Pedro and throughout the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area," Mayor Villaraigosa said. "The return of Disney Cruise Line to our port speaks volumes about our ability to attract world-class cruise lines to the area."
The addition of a new homeport for Disney Cruise Line is part of the overall expansion plan for The Walt Disney Company. Two new ships, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, will arrive in Florida's Port Canaveral in 2011 and 2012, respectively.
"We are looking forward to returning to the Port of Los Angeles and offering our special brand of family cruises on the West Coast," said Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Jay Rasulo. "Having a Disney Cruise Line ship based in this region is something families on the West Coast have wanted for a long time, and we're pleased to bring the Disney Wonder to Southern California in 2011."
Disney Cruise Line has successfully tested the West Coast market with two summer seasons of Mexican Riviera itineraries from the Port of Los Angeles. The Disney Magic cruise ship first called on the West Coast during the summer of 2005 as part of Disneyland's 50th anniversary and returned again during the summer of 2008. Disney Cruise Line has not yet announced the details of its itineraries for 2011.
"The return of Disney Cruise Line to the Port of Los Angeles is just one more reason visitors will come to Los Angeles to help our city thrive," added Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Geraldine Knatz, Ph.d. "The LA area is already home to Disneyland – it's a natural fit."
The Port of Los Angeles continues to be one of the busiest cruise ports on the West Coast. Known for its proximity to area attractions, including Disneyland Resort, and ease of convenience for transportation and nearby airports, the Port of Los Angeles provides cruisers with a great experience.
HAL Debuts New 14-Day Alaskan Adventurer Cruises in 2010
|
Holland America Line is introducing new 14-day Alaskan Adventurer cruises on its flagship ms Amsterdam in 2010, which will sail roundtrip from Seattle and include a call at Anchorage for the first time. The 1,380-guest Amsterdam will be the first cruise ship of a major cruise line to call regularly in Anchorage, providing guests with a full day and evening in Alaska's major city. The Amsterdam will also call at Homer and Kodiak, two new and less frequented ports for guests to discover.
The new itinerary reduces the cruise line's overall 2010 Alaska deployment by 10 sailings or about 11,000 guests. The 10 new 14-day sailings replace 20 7-day sailings between Vancouver and Seward, Alaska.
"The new Alaskan Adventurer itinerary is a great new offering in Holland America's Alaska cruise schedule," said Richard D. Meadows, CTC, executive vice president, marketing, sales, and guest programs. "It provides a longer itinerary choice – one that lets guests experience far more of Alaska's grandeur while enjoying the ease of a roundtrip cruise. We anticipate many guests will opt for a longer cruise that includes more glacier viewing and ports of call."
The 14-day Alaskan Adventurer cruises depart roundtrip from Seattle May 17 through September 6, 2010. The Amsterdam sails the scenic Inside Passage, highlighted by cruising Tracy Arm fjord with its magnificent twin Sawyer Glaciers. The ship also cruises by Alaska's mighty Hubbard Glacier in Yakutat Bay – the largest glacier in North America. Historic ports of call include Ketchikan, Skagway, Sitka, Anchorage, Homer, Kodiak, Juneau and Victoria, BC.
"With the three new ports of Anchorage, Homer and Kodiak, guests will enjoy a unique Alaska cruising experience not available on other cruise itineraries," said Meadows.

Cunard Line Unveils Queen Elizabeth
|
Cunard Line revealed itinerary and design plans this week for its newest ship, Queen Elizabeth, which is scheduled to enter service on 12 October 2010, giving one of the oldest names in shipping the strength of operating the youngest fleet in the industry. Queen Elizabeth will be the third new ship to be introduced by Cunard in six years and the second largest Cunard ship ever built.
Queen Elizabeth will feature the unique Cunard traditions linking her with her sisters Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria, and their predecessors. She will also debut some exciting features that will give the vessel her own style and personality, plus all the modern day luxuries Cunard's guests have come to expect.
Likewise, Cunard's renowned White Star Service will be ever-present, ensuring that travellers who seek a return to tradition will enjoy proper, authentic experiences that reflect the line's 170-year heritage of formality and civility at sea.
In announcing the first details of the new ship, Cunard President Carol Marlow said "Cunard holds the distinction of sailing the most famous ocean liners in the world and I'm delighted to announce this magnificent addition to our fleet, which marks the return to our operation of three Queens simultaneously. For more than 70 years there has been an 'Elizabeth' in the fleet and this beautiful modern-day celebration of our past 'Elizabeths' will ensure this proud tradition continues far into this century. Sir Samuel Cunard would be rightly proud."
Queen Elizabeth is named after Cunard's first Queen Elizabeth, the famed Cunard ship which was launched in 1938 as the world's largest liner. The new ship will reference her predecessor in interior grandeur, décor and style, but with a modern twist.
From the outside, her distinctive black and red livery will hint at the experience that differentiates a Cunard liner from a modern-day cruise ship. This will be most evident in the ship's adherence to liner decor, with elegant double and triple height public rooms on a grand scale, intricately detailed interiors replete with rich wood panelling, mosaics, gleaming chandeliers, and cool marbles. Art Deco features will pay homage to the original Queen Elizabeth, and will allow the new ship to reflect a more civilized era of travel. And in addition to the extensive Cunard entertainment programme onboard, Queen Elizabeth will offer some unique strands inspired by the era of the first Queen Elizabeth, including country house parties, lively piano evenings and a variety of dancing from that time - including the jitterbug and jive - all within the setting of this 21st century ship.
As a successor to Queen Elizabeth 2, the ship will also reflect this great liner via artwork and memorabilia and will have its very own 'Yacht Club,' named after the lively aft lounge on QE2. Offering guests 270 degree views and the perfect setting for activities and gatherings during the day, it will also double as a dramatic evening venue for cocktails and dancing.
Similarly, through photography, memorabilia and exhibits, the ship will recognize the historic links Cunard has enjoyed with Royalty over the years.
The ship's distinctive public spaces include:
Queens Room - a new take on the traditional Cunard ballroom, with artwork depicting views from royal palaces, and photography of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal family, along with its 1000 square foot dance floor for Grand Balls and Tea Dances at sea.
Garden Lounge - with its magnificent vaulted glass ceiling creating a conservatory feel inspired by the glass houses of Kew Gardens, beneath where guests will enjoy Supper Clubs, and mix dining with dancing under the stars.
Games Deck - Named after the same deck on the original Queen Elizabeth, the Games Deck will offer paddle tennis, croquet and traditional British bowls. (Interestingly, the ship's home port of Southampton is home to the oldest surviving bowls green in the world, first used in 1299.)
Midships Bar - will pay homage to her namesake liner, the first Queen Elizabeth, with memorabilia displayed from that era.
The ship's dining venues include:
Queens Grill and Princess Grill - The ship will also feature the line's celebrated five-star Grills accommodation and dining, with its al fresco dining option on a private deck terrace - first introduced on Queen Victoria - beautiful restaurants, Grills Lounge and sunbathing deck.
The popular Britannia Club, having first debuted aboard Queen Mary 2, features a private dining room with single seating dining for those guests in the top Balcony staterooms.
Britannia Restaurant - Art Deco decorative flourishes create a dramatic backdrop for this two-tiered dining room featuring a sweeping staircase ideal for making a grand entrance.
Queen Elizabeth's maiden 2010 season will consist of six voyages, calling on 32 distinct ports in 18 countries. Her Maiden Voyage will depart from Cunard's homeport of Southampton on 12 October 2010, en route to the Atlantic Isles. The 13-night voyage will call at Vigo (for Santiago de Compostela), Lisbon, Seville (Cadiz), Gran Canaria (Las Palmas), Tenerife (Santa Cruz de Tenerife), La Palma (Santa Cruz de La Palma) and Madeira (Funchal). Fares start from $2,995 per person.
The ship will then embark on five celebratory inaugural voyages:

Norwegian Epic to Feature Largest Ship-Within-A-Ship Suite Complex at Sea
|
At the Seatrade Cruise Shipping Miami Convention last Wednesday, Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) revealed the full range of accommodations to be offered on its next generation of Freestyle Cruising ship, Norwegian Epic. In another industry first, Norwegian is also opening group block space reservations on Norwegian Epic today exclusively for its travel partners before the ship goes on sale to the general public later this spring.
Norwegian Epic, NCL's largest Freestyle Cruising ship to date, set for delivery in May 2010, will feature the biggest ship-within-a-ship suite complex at sea, comprising 60 suites and villas on two private decks at the top of the ship. Guests staying in one of these suites will have exclusive access to the Courtyard Villa complex featuring a pool, two whirlpools, gym, saunas, sundeck, indoor/outdoor dining, bar/nightclub and concierge lounge. Always an innovator, Norwegian pioneered the ship-within-a-ship concept on its Jewel class ships and is now taking that vision to epic proportions on the 4,200-passenger Norwegian Epic.
For the budget-conscious traveler, Norwegian also unveiled a new category of inside staterooms - The Studios. A first in design for the cruise industry, these ultra-modern staterooms maximize space and feature a large, round window that looks out into the corridor, along with customizable color changing light effects that mirror different stages of the day or the guest's mood, including a love setting for those romantic nights at sea. The Studios occupy two decks and have exclusive key-card access to the Living Room, a two-story shared private lounge. The area is a two-floor lounge which features a concierge, bar, room service, two large TV screens, and comfy seating for hanging out, reading a book or just enjoying a cocktail before dinner.
For the first time in its 43-year history, Norwegian is also introducing spa balcony, deluxe balcony staterooms and suites located within the spa with complimentary access to the ship's ultra-relaxing thermal suite and invigorating and state-of-the-art fitness center. For families traveling on Norwegian Epic, NCL has placed the majority of its family-friendly staterooms, both deluxe balcony and balcony staterooms, many that connect, on two decks within close proximity to an expanded, biggest ever Kids Crew facility for added convenience.
"True to its name, Norwegian Epic takes Freestyle accommodations to the next level, offering a wide range of staterooms, suites and villas to suit every type of guest," said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line's chief executive officer. "Since this ship is our largest and most innovative Freestyle Cruising vessel to date, we've taken a fresh approach to our stateroom mix, offering niche accommodations such as our family and spa categories, along with creative, ground-breaking design as evidenced by The Studios with Living Room and largest ever Courtyard Villa complex."
These specialized accommodations complement the ship's New Wave Inside, Balcony and Deluxe Balcony staterooms announced last year. These New Wave staterooms feature curved walls and lines creating a modern and chic experience. Norwegian has maximized the living space with a bathroom that is completely unique with a separate shower stall, separate water closet and a modern vanity top sink. Norwegian Epic is also a balcony-rich ship, with all of its outside staterooms featuring private balconies.
More details on Norwegian Epic's accommodations are as follows:

Port Everglades Builds World's Largest Cruise Terminal
|
Port Everglades unveiled its plans this week to more than triple the size of Cruise Terminal 18 in time for the arrival of Royal Caribbean International's 5,400-passenger Oasis class of ships, the largest cruise ships in the world. Port Everglades Director Phillip C. Allen told journalists attending the Cruise Shipping Miami Conference (formerly known as Seatrade) that once completed, Terminal 18 will become the largest single-ship cruise terminal in the world.
"There may be bigger terminals that service two ships at the same time, but Terminal 18 is being constructed specifically to handle one giant Oasis class ship at a time. Guests will be treated to the Oasis experience as soon as they enter the terminal," Allen says. "The Port's staff meets weekly with Royal Caribbean's staff and the contractors so we can ensure the project moves forward smoothly and rapidly in time for a grand opening in November 2009."
Just last cruise season, before construction ever began, Terminal 18 was already the largest of Port Everglades' 12 cruise terminals with 67,500 square feet of interior space. Once the construction is complete in November 2009, the terminal will be more than three times larger, with a total of 240,000 square feet on two floors.
The terminal's mega-size will accommodate mega numbers of cruise passengers and their luggage so that both departing and arriving guests can be processed simultaneously. In the new Terminal 18, guests will debark and embark through entirely different sections of the building, permitting the simultaneous debarking of guests from the ship while embarking guests are processed and seated inside the terminal waiting to board the ship. The terminal area for debarking guests is 102,000 square feet on two levels, while the arrival hall for embarking guests is in the new section of Cruise Terminal 18 and encompasses 138,000 square feet on two levels.
The goal is that once the ship is cleared for embarkation, the transition for guests to go from curbside to the ship can be completed in 15 minutes.
FMT of Sweden is manufacturing two new "switch-back" passenger loading bridges for the new terminal that will replace the current telescoping bridges and will provide guests with an easy transition from the terminal and to the ship.
To expedite debark, there will be 22 booths for U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel to process guests after their cruise. Embark will be expedited by the availability of 90 modern check-in counters and a bank of overhead video screens that provide arriving guests with up-to-the-minute directions and information.
Terminal 18 is located in the center of Port Everglades directly on the Port's main thoroughfare. It is separated from other cruise terminals so that vehicular traffic to and from the terminal is isolated and can move smoothly. An intermodal transportation center will have separate entrances and traffic routes for buses, trucks, taxis and cars so that vehicles can move smoothly and swiftly to pick up and drop off guests and provisions. In addition, there will be more than 1,000 parking spaces within walking distance of the terminal.
Shades of green with blue accents will represent the sea and sky on the exterior of Cruise Terminal 18, while the interior is bathed in natural light from a 4,000-square-foot skylight in the atrium and a massive window at the entranceway.
Renowned international artist Michele Oka Doner was selected through Broward County's Art in Public Places program to create a 3,000-square-foot work of art on the atrium floor of the new terminal. Inspired by the colors of the ocean, the new terminal will feature beautiful deep green and blue terrazzo flooring that evokes undulating ocean waves. Embedded in the terrazzo will be bronze oceanic seeds that appear to have drifted far and wide into the current. As a tribute to the maritime mega-experience and the majestic scope of the Oasis-class ships, the artwork encompasses a dramatic bronze globe crisscrossed with lines of latitude and longitude. This lustrous work of art will be energized with great sweeps of iridescent mother-of-pearl, simulating the trade winds that circle the earth.
Although the goal is to move guests quickly through the terminal so they can begin their cruise vacation, those who arrive early will be able to relax on the upper level of the terminal with seating available to accommodate up to 3,000 passengers. Once there, they can recharge electrical devices and stay connected through free wireless Internet access. Children will be provided with their own playground area inside the terminal for use before boarding.
An economic impact study conducted by Martin and Associates as part of the Port Everglades Master/Vision Plan, projects that by the fifth year of the 10-year agreement between Broward County and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL) to homeport the Oasis-class and other RCL brand ships at Port Everglades, an estimated 8,012 jobs will be supported. These jobs are anticipated to generate $356.5 million in personal income and $32.8 million in state and local taxes. In addition, the study anticipated that more than 1,414 new construction jobs would be created as a result of the Terminal 18 expansion.

Holland America Line's New 'Showroom at Sea' Debuts
|
Holland America Line will introduce a new concept in shipboard entertainment with its first "Showroom at Sea" in May, 2009. An innovative musical repertory company consisting of seasoned Broadway performers will be the centerpiece of an exciting new entertainment lineup. Created in partnership with Stiletto Entertainment, producers of Emmy award winning TV shows and concert tours, the new programming debuts on the Veendam in May as part of Holland America Line's Signature of Excellence enhancements.
The Showroom at Sea, a modern-day take on the classic nightclub, will feature state of the art technology and a different show and themed environment nightly. Comprised of cast members with credits such as Les Miserables and Rent on Broadway, National Tours of Mamma Mia and performances with the Tokyo Philharmonic, the shows include "Street Singin'," "Encore," "Live from the Stardust Lounge," and "Bob Mackie's Broadway."
"We are always seeking to deliver increasingly innovative entertainment for our guests," said Richard D. Meadows, CTC, executive vice president, marketing, sales and guest programs. "Guests will be wowed by this fresh approach to entertainment and the complete transformation of the showroom."
The Showroom at Sea is a completely redesigned main stage that features a seamless transition between the room and the stage, with all new seating and an enlarged dance floor enabling guests to combine cocktails, dancing and a show. A new sound system, enhanced lighting, and state of the art video projections transport guests into diverse environments as scenery and decor leap off the stage and into the seats. Each evening features unique drink menus and table settings.
The room showcases non-stop variety as a different combination of the repertory company and musicians perform each night. From four vocalists singing pop/rock on the street corner, to two classical vocalists backed by a lavish 14-piece orchestra, to an evening at a fictitious Vegas nightclub hosted by the resident comedian, each night reveals an exciting new production.
Scotland Targets Increased Cruise Ship
|
Scotland's increasing popularity as a destination for cruise ships is in line for a further boost with the launch of an organisation to promote and market its ports and many visitor attractions internationally.
Cruise Scotland, representing ports and service companies throughout the country, officially sets sail today, Wednesday 18th March, at a breakfast reception during the industry's leading event, the Seatrade Cruise Shipping Miami Exhibition and Conference.
Chairman, Richard Alexander, said: "Scotland is a great destination for a range of cruises, with so much for passengers to see and do within easy reach of established ports on the mainland and islands. Now is a very opportune time to be stepping up our efforts, with greater scope for cruise lines to include Scotland in their itineraries."
Scotland's Minister for Tourism, Jim Mather, said: "Tourism makes an important contribution to the Scottish economy and it is vital that we continue to look at new and innovative ways of attracting new visitors to our great country. We need to capitalise on new opportunities and ensure that Scotland remains ahead of the game.
"Scotland is becoming an increasingly popular destination for cruise ships and our industry is set to take full advantage as a result of this exciting new initiative. With dollars and euros now able to go much further for overseas visitors, this is the perfect time to make cruise operators aware of the fantastic tourist attractions we have to offer and attract new visitors to Scotland.
"There is no better time to visit Scotland with our Homecoming celebrations bringing with them a fantastic chance to attract many more visitors to Scotland throughout 2009. With an excellent range of over 300 events taking place across the country, there will be something for everyone."
The industry-led organisation, which is also supported by Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Scottish Development International, Scottish Enterprise and VisitScotland, is exhibiting on booth 636 at the Miami show.
Denise Hill, VisitScotland's Head of International Marketing said: "It is great to see the cruise industry working together in this way to develop plans for the future. In the current economic situation this kind of joint working is important, as is a focus on improving the quality of our visitors' experience while they are in Scotland.
"The international cruise market is set to grow, and we are keen to understand more of the opportunities presented by new types of cruise passenger, including special interest and more active cruise passengers who are keen to explore Scotland."
With recruitment ongoing, Cruise Scotland members to date include: Aberdeen Harbour Board; Argyll & Bute Council (Oban); Clydeport Operations Ltd (Greenock); Cruise Highlands Ltd (Invergordon); Excursions Ltd (Edinburgh); Highland Council (Portree); Lerwick Port Authority; Morrison Tours (Leith); Orkney Cruise Services; Orkney Harbours; Peterhead Port Authority; Scrabster Harbour Trust; Stornoway Port Authority; and Ullapool Harbour Trust.
Scottish ports already serve various itineraries, from trans-Atlantic, North Atlantic and North West Europe cruises, to round-Britain and niche markets, such as golf and bird and marine life watchers.
With an initial three-year marketing strategy, Cruise Scotland is looking to expand its market by 10% year-on-year. Scotland enjoyed a 48% share, worth more than GBP37 million, of all cruise ship calls in the UK in 2008, when a record 377 ships and around 202,000 passengers arrived in Scottish ports. The larger vessels now operating add further to the significance of higher vessel numbers. By comparison, Scottish ports handled 169 cruise ships and 64,902 passengers in 1998.
Scotland's numerous attractions include stunning scenery and vibrant cities; culture and heritage; local produce, whisky distilleries and crafts; wildlife and golf.

Disney Announces Names for New Cruise Ships
|
At last week's 2009 Annual Meeting of Shareholders of The Walt Disney Company, Disney announced the names of the company's two new cruise ships.
"Last week, steel cutting began on our next two Disney cruise ships. Today I'm pleased to announce their names," said Robert A. Iger, Disney president and CEO. "The Disney Dream will set sail in 2011, while the Disney Fantasy will hit the high seas in 2012."
Similar to the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, the names were chosen to celebrate Disney's unique heritage of creating enchanting places and stories where dreams really do come true.
"The names are very telling of our brand and are part of our history," said Karl Holz, president of Disney Cruise Line and New Vacation Operations. "Disney is known for making dreams come true, and for creating worlds of fantasy that go beyond the imagination. The names are a natural choice for our ships."
As noted, Disney Cruise Line began construction on the new ships with a steel cutting ceremony at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. The first piece of steel cut was part of the art deco inspired scrollwork that will grace the bow of the ships. Similar to the scrollwork on the existing Disney Cruise Line ships, Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, the intricate pattern is reminiscent of the classic ocean liners of the 1930s, with added touches of Disney whimsy.
Since finalizing a contract with the Meyer Werft shipyard to build the two new ships, Disney Cruise Line and Walt Disney Imagineering have created a truly distinctive design. Over the next few years, construction will continue, bringing the design to reality, with the Disney Dream scheduled for delivery in 2011 and the Disney Fantasy in 2012.
The new ships will be purpose built with families in mind, and specially designed areas and activities for each member of the family to allow for both quality time together and wonderful individual experiences. The focus is to provide a setting where families can reconnect, adults can recharge and kids can immerse themselves in worlds only Disney can create.
The expansion will more than double the passenger capacity for Disney Cruise Line. Each ship will have 1,250 staterooms and will each be 128,000 tons.
New President And Chief Operating Officer for NCL
|
Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) announced last week that cruise industry veteran Roberto Martinoli has been appointed president and chief operating officer. In this senior leadership role, he is responsible for all aspects of fleet operations, including the construction of NCL's largest Freestyle Cruising vessel, Norwegian Epic. He reports to Kevin Sheehan, NCL's chief executive officer, who maintains responsibility for all other areas of NCL's business.
"We are so pleased to welcome Roberto to NCL as he brings a vast amount of expertise in operations to the company," said Kevin Sheehan, NCL's chief executive officer. "Under his leadership, NCL's legacy of innovation will continue and take us through to our next generation of Freestyle Cruising with the arrival of Norwegian Epic."
Prior to his appointment Martinoli was working in Europe as advisor to Apollo Management, a private equity company that is also one of NCL's shareholders. Martinoli has more than 30 years experience in the shipping and cruise business. His previous roles include executive vice president, operations at Carnival Cruise Lines; senior vice president, operations at Costa Crociere and managing partner at Martinoli Group, a ship management and consulting company.
"I am very eager to join NCL and thank Kevin for the opportunity to contribute to its success. NCL's fleet is not only the youngest of the North American contemporary market, but its ships are also built with the highest industry's standard and are uniquely designed around the customer's needs," said Martinoli. "During my tenure at Apollo Management, I had the fortune to meet many of NCL's executives and I look forward professionally and personally to joining this remarkable and strong team."
Martinoli holds a master's degree in naval architecture and mechanical engineering from the University of Genoa.
Pullmantur Sells Oceanic to PeaceBoat Group
|
Spanish Tour operator Pullmantur announced this week that the SS Oceanic has been acquired by a Panamanian company with operations in Asia, for use by the PeaceBoat educational program around the world. The Oceanic began her career in 1965 as the Oceanic sailing for Home Lines. She was sold to Premier Cruise lines in the mid-1980s and was acquired by Pullmantur in 2001.
Pullmantur said that the sale was part of the companies renewal and growth program. The company has added four new ships to the fleet in 2008 and 2009 and the Oceanic was the most expensive ship in the fleet to operate.
"We take great pride in this sale and the continuity of the SS Oceanic activity. With this sale, Pullmantur continues to renew its fleet and consolidate its leadership strategy," says Gonzalo Chico Barbier, Pullmantur´s President and CEO.
The SS Oceanic is a beautiful ocean liner, 238 meters long and with a gross tonnage of 38,722 tons. She was acquired by Pullmantur in 2001 and first completed its Barcelona-Malta-Naples-Civittavechia-Livorno-Villefranche-Barcelona itinerary in May 2001. Since then, she has enjoyed an excellent reputation and has been an extremely popular vessel in the Spanish market.
Reservations on SS Oceanic´s itineraries will be reassigned and service guaranteed. Pullmantur will offer its clients departure on its flagship, the Sovereign, with an excellent service offer, at no additional cost. The Sovereign will sail the Mediterranean sea between Barcelona-Mónaco/Montecarlo-Florencia/Pisa-Roma-Nápoles-Túnez-Barcelona and become the best cruise option in the Mediterranean for the Spanish population.
The sale will result in a small gain that is immaterial to the company's financial results.
Regal Empress Sold for Scrap, Bahamas Celebration Takes Over Route
|
The 56-year old Regal Empress which had been operating on popular two- and three-night Bahamas cruises from Port Everglades for the past several years was pulled from service earlier this month and reportedly sold for scrap this week. The ship had been operating for Imperial Majesty cruise lines which said that the decision to replace the ship was due to expensive upgrades that would have been necessary in order for the ship to meet new safety requirements that go into effect in 2010.
Celebration Cruise Line, which began service this week is operating the newer Bahamas Celebration on the same itinerary. Many of the executives and employees from Imperial Majesty Cruises are now with Celebration Cruise Line.
Bahamas Celebration began service as the ferry Prinsesse Ragnhild in 1981. According to Celebration Cruise Line, the ship has undergone $10 million in renovations and can carry 1,500 passengers two- and three-night cruises to Nassau, Bahamas. The Two-night cruises depart Monday and Wednesday and the three-night voyages depart on Fridays.
Princess Employee Charged in Passengers Assault
|
A crew member on board the Coral Princess was arrested and charged with assaulting a female passenger last week. The 38-year old cew member, Jorge Teixeira, worked as a head waiter in one of the ship's dining rooms and was arrested when the Coral Princess arrived in Los Angeles, California at the conclusion of a 14-day repositioning cruise from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
According to the criminal complaint filed by authorities, a 42-year old female passenger reported that Teixeira assaulted her late Thursday evening after the two had shared a bottle of wine in a secluded area of a dining room. Teixeira was charged with aggravated sexual abuse and was being held without bond pending a detention hearing. If convicted, Teixeira faces a potential maximum sentence of life in prison.
James Taylor to Perform Aboard Queen Mary 2
|
Cunard Line is proud to announce that Grammy® Award-winning singer-songwriter James Taylor and his band will perform during Queen Mary 2's June 19 eastbound Transatlantic Crossing. Sailing from New York to Southampton, England, Taylor will headline two Cunard Command Performances in the ship's Royal Court Theatre during the six-day journey.
"We are honoured to welcome James Taylor aboard our flagship Queen Mary 2 and into a lineage of luminaries who have sailed with Cunard during our 170-year history," said Carol Marlow, president of Cunard Line. "Our guests will most certainly enjoy this intimate concert experience with an American music icon."
Over the course of his celebrated career, Taylor has earned 40 gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards and five Grammy® Awards for works ranging from Sweet Baby James in 1970 to Covers, his most recent album featuring his own interpretation of tunes from the 50s, 60s and 70s, for which he was nominated for two 2009 Grammy Awards. In 2000, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Most recently, Taylor was one of a select few music artists who performed for President Barack Obama's inauguration.
"I've always wanted to take an ocean liner back to Europe. It's such a civilized way to go, and the Queen Mary 2 is the last word in first class travel. It was a dream to use the passage to transport and rehearse our summer tour: band, crew and family; kit and caboodle. I'm looking forward to the pair of concerts at the end of the trip and, hallelujah, no jet lag," Taylor said.

MSC Crew Rescues Passenger Following Gangway Collapse
|
MSC Cruises said it will join local port authorities and governmental officials in commending four crew members who rushed to the aid of an overboard passenger on MSC Fantasia. The incident happened March 5 in the port of Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
MSC Fantasia was moored and passengers were disembarking when strong winds caused three bow mooring bitts to become detached simultaneously. As a result, the ropes snapped, the ship moved away from the dock, the gangway fell away and a disembarking guest fell into the water. Four members of the crew immediately dived in to help the man, who was brought to shore in just a few minutes and taken to a hospital, where he remained under observation. The passenger is of Egyptian origin with Italian nationality and is in his 80s.
MSC Cruises said the port authorities have confirmed their responsibility for the incident.
The port authorities of Palma de Mallorca, the city mayor, a delegate of the central government in Mallorca and MSC Cruises will officially recognize the bravery and heroism of the crew members. They are Salvatore Caso, chief crew steward from Italy; Naim Samsudin, able fireman from Indonesia; Andrian O. Williams, housekeeping cleaner from Madagascar; and Faamoe Lalopua, able sailor from Samoa.
At the time of the incident, the ship's captain immediately took control of the ship, preventing any damage, and the ship was transferred to a different pier. The crew members were also taken to a hospital for a check-up and all four have since returned to work on the ship, which continued to cruise to its next destination as scheduled
Fred. Olsen Releases Details About Gulf of Aden Incident
|
In response to press reports that claimed Fred. Olsen's Balmoral was attacked by pirates in the Gulf of Aden last week, the cruise line issued a statement to clarify what happened. According to the statement at no time was the vessel 'under attack', and there were no visual sightings of 'armed pirates'.
During the daytime sailing through the Gulf of Aden on Tuesday 3rd March 2009, only fishing boats were sighted showing no sign of alarming activities. At 19.45 hrs that evening, two suspicious craft were observed on radar travelling towards Balmoral. As a purely precautionary action, the ship's Master implemented aggressive manoeuvring, contact was made with the EU Coalition Task Force, and passengers were requested to assemble in safe havens. At 20.45 hrs that evening the EU warship confirmed that the area around the vessel was clear, and the alert was stood down at 21.23 hrs. This was a 'suspicious incident' and not an 'attack'.
During the incident, searchlights were directed at the approaching craft and flares used to indicate that it had been observed. It is possible that this was interpreted as gunfire, but Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines can state categorically that there was no gunfire, and that although the approaching vessel got to within 400m of Balmoral it left the area without incident, and because of the darkness it was not possible to identify the vessel or its occupants.
The Master of Balmoral has reported that the mood on board was good throughout with no panic or adverse reaction from the passengers. The vessel is now continuing on its scheduled itinerary.
This week's commentary by TravelPage.com's European Cruise Editor, Malcolm Oliver takes a closer look and the recently released images of NCL's Norwegian Epic.
Norwegian Epic: Beauty or a Beast
Norwegian Cruise Line have at long last unveiled the first images of its new 153,000-gross ton, 4,200-passenger Norwegian Epic, the company's largest and most innovative Freestyle Cruising ship to date. Currently under construction at STX Europe in St. Nazaire, France, the contemporary, balcony-rich, 19-deck ship will be 1,068 feet long, 133 feet wide, with a draft of 28.5 feet when completed in May 2010.
Artists renderings of NCL's project, code named F3 (shorthand for third generation freestyle), had been leaked on the internet, a long time ago, and before the ship's name was announced as 'Norwegian Epic'. Many commentators though that the leaked renderings were so ugly that they must have surely been fakes, created by a prankster using Photoshop. However, shockingly it turns out that they were genuine and represent what the ship will eventually look like.
Now in maritime history there have been some cruise ships that have been later converted into abominations, but without a doubt Norwegian Epic must be the ugliest cruise ship ever built from scratch on purpose. Her profile is dominated by a giant 'carbuncle' on the top, which will house the premium 'Villa' accommodations. Members of our CruiseTalk forum have variously described her as "a Lego set", "a container ship with windows", "a Beluga Whale" and a "a pig in lipstick"
Ship aficionados are quick to point out that the creation of 'Epic' is set against the scrapping of the beautiful 'SS Norway' (the ex SS France of the French Line) and the possible disposal of the legendary ocean liner SS United States, both owned by NCL.
NCL's 'Pride of America' is another ugly ship in my opinion. This is possibly due to the fact that she started life as one of two 'Project America' ships for American Classic Voyages, who filed for bankruptcy before the ships were complete. The hulls were later purchased by NCL, who finished off the design and construction, creating 'Pride of America'. This reminds me of the saying, "A camel is a horse designed by committee". Nevertheless, 'Norwegian Epic' makes 'Pride of America' looks like a beauty queen by comparison.
However, many would argue that it's what is on the inside of a ship that is important. After all, you cannot see the outside of a cruise ship when you are on board. Personally I have high hopes that NCL are going to deliver an innovative ship with some exciting interiors and facilities. We already know that she will have unique 'wavy cabins' and the first real 'ice bar' afloat.
Given the fact that there is a global recession and cruising looks set to experience a downturn, we still have some exciting ships scheduled for delivery in 2010. There is of course, 'Norwegian Epic', 'Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas', P&O's 'Azura' (sister of Ventura) and Cunard's 'Queen Elizabeth' (sister of Queen Victoria). Let's not forget the stunning Celebrity 'Solstice' has already entered service, to be followed by 'Equinox' later this year. So we are still living in exciting cruising times - so stay tuned!

New Owners May Open QE2 to Visitors
|
Arabian Business is reporting that QE2'S new owners, Nakheel may open the former Cunard flagship up to visitors pending while it draws up plans for its transformation into a luxury hotel.
In a statement, Nakheel also reiterated its commitment to the renovation scheme and insisted there were no plans to sell off the world famous liner amid the current global economic crisis.
"The ultimate goal is to renovate and refurbish QE2, and for her to be the focal point of a luxury precinct, dedicated to her, that will recreate an authentic luxury ocean liner ambience and lifestyle. In the meantime there is no question of QE2 being operated as a cruise liner or of her being sold to any third party whatsoever," said a company statement sent to Arabian Business.
Oceania and Fincantieri Begin Construction of Marina
|
A ceremony marking the Keel Laying for Oceania Cruises' Marina was held last week at the Sestri Ponente shipyard of Fincantieri near Genoa, Italy.
During the age-old ceremony which was attended by members of both Oceania Cruises' and Fincantieri's management teams, Frank Del Rio, Chairman and CEO of Prestige Cruise Holdings and founder of Oceania Cruises, welded a US Silver Dollar and a pre-Castro Silver Cuban Peso into the keel of the new ship. The welding of the coins into the keel is long-standing maritime tradition which is believed to solicit good fortune for the ship, its crew and its passengers during its seagoing life. After the coins were welded into the keel, the first of the 55 steel blocks which comprise Marina was lowered into the building dock thus marking the official start of the construction of Oceania Cruises' first purpose-built ship.
"This is a momentous day in the history of Oceania Cruises, one which will only be eclipsed on the day we take delivery of Marina in 2010. We want to express our sincere thanks to our loyal guests, travel partners and the entire Oceania Cruises team for all their dedication and hard work in making this new ship become a reality," stated Frank Del Rio, Chairman and CEO of Prestige Cruise Holdings.
Marina, the first of the new Oceania-Class, represents an evolution of the line's extremely popular Regatta-Class ships, retaining all of the warmth, popular design elements and signature amenities the line is renowned for while affording guests an additional level of comfort, convenience and many new luxury amenities. Designed to cruise to all corners of the globe, the new ships will boast a cruising speed 20% faster than the Regatta-Class.
The new ships will be awash in rich woods, Italian marble, lustrous granite, fine wool carpets and sumptuous leather. No detail is being overlooked to create an array of spacious, yet intimate public spaces and luxurious staterooms and suites. They will accommodate 1,252 guests in 626 staterooms and suites who will be served by more than 780 staff members. 96% of all accommodations will feature private teak verandas and guests will dine in their choice of six open seating restaurants.
Additional details on the Marina's suites and staterooms, restaurants, guest facilities and itineraries will be released in the coming months.
New Zealand Calls for Conference on Antarctic Cruises
|
Confirmation that passengers on a grounded tourist ship in Antarctica are safe is welcome news, but the accident highlights the need for stricter controls in the Southern Ocean, according to New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully.
"If nothing is done, it will be only a matter of time before there is a disaster in the Southern Ocean. The international community must take steps to ensure that never happens," Mr McCully said.
"To that end, New Zealand will host a conference later this year on Antarctic ship-borne tourism. The focus will be on how to prevent a major maritime accident, and how to put controls around what is a rapidly-expanding, but currently inadequately regulated industry.
"Tourist ships pose a significant risk not only to human life, but also to a pristine, fragile environment. The number of people cruising in Antarctic waters has quadrupled to 46,000 in the last 15 years, which has resulted in visits from bigger tourist ships that just aren't suited to the conditions.
"It is also critical that the industry recognizes that the Southern Ocean is a remote, inhospitable, and dangerous place for tourist vessels, that is difficult for Search and Rescue services to reach in the case of an emergency," Mr McCully said.
Attendees at the conference will include experts from the 47 countries that are party to the Antarctic Treaty, along with representatives from the tourism industry, international institutions, and NGOs.
Windstar Launches New Dining Option
|
Windstar Cruises, which operates a three-ship fleet of luxury yachts that explore the hidden harbors and secluded coves of the world's most treasured destinations, will launch a new dining experience on 148-guest Wind Star and Wind Spirit. Romance is under sail as guests enjoy water views, exquisite sunsets and star-filled skies while dining alfresco on 5-star cuisine at poolside grill Candles.
"Wind Star and Wind Spirit guests now have the option of dining in two evening venues -- The Restaurant or Candles -- allowing our guests more choice and value," said Diane Moore, president, Windstar Cruises. "In summer 2008 Wind Surf launched Candles, serving the finest steaks and skewers, and it has received such great reviews that we decided to introduce the concept on Wind Star and Wind Spirit."
At Candles, guests start with insalate caprese, followed by a main course selection of tender rib eye, New York steaks, fresh Swordfish skewers or assorted vegetable skewers all grilled to perfection on deck. The course is served with a choice of sauces: black peppercorn, creamy mushroom, Cafe de Paris butter or red wine sauce. At the end of the evening, guests savor delicious Tiramisu made of savoiardi dipped in coffee and mascarpone cream.
Candles accommodates approximately 30 guests per night and is subject to weather conditions. While there is no additional charge, reservations are recommended.
Despite Economic Concerns Carnival Bookings Strong
|
Despite the challenging economy, Carnival Cruise Lines is reporting strong booking volumes as prospective vacationers take advantage of some of the best vacation values in years.
For the one-week period ended March 1, 2009, Carnival recorded the highest number of net weekly bookings in its history. Additionally, on a cumulative basis since mid-January, net bookings are up 10 percent compared to the same period in 2008, although pricing is at lower levels. Wave season typically runs from about mid-January through early spring and is traditionally the busiest, most important booking period in the cruise industry.
Last week's record reservations activity encompassed all of the line's 22-vessel fleet, which depart from a variety of convenient, drive-to homeports throughout the U.S.
Gerry Cahill, Carnival's president and CEO, attributed the increase in bookings to the line's travel agent partners and consumers' appreciation for the inherent value and affordability of a "Fun Ship" vacation, as well as aggressive marketing efforts. Among the marketing channels being utilized are broadcast, e-mail and on-line, along with targeted sales promotions, including a one-day sale.
"This record booking activity, while at lower pricing, is certainly encouraging. It tells us that despite the uncertain economic climate, consumers clearly need more fun in their lives and view their vacations as a valuable and necessary part of that," Cahill said. "And Carnival's unmatched combination of quality, affordability and fun along with multiple close-to-home departure points and the greatest choice of short cruise options in the industry, make a 'Fun Ship' cruise the ideal getaway for today's consumers," he added.
