Overview: She began life in 1958 as the SS Brasil of Moore McCormack Lines, making 14 day trips from New York to South America. She was bought by Holland America in 1971 and sailed for at least 5 other cruise lines before becoming the flagship of World Explorer Cruises.
Trips on the Universe Explorer focus on education and on-shore excursions rather than glitz and glamor. You can stay up late and there is entertainment on board, but her main focus is the places she visits. She carries well qualified experts about each of the ports she visits and in depth lectures about the people and places you will be visiting. Fellow passengers tend to be older than average. Service and food on board are not exceptional but they are about average for the cruise industry.
Note: During the off-season, the Universe Explorer serves as a floating classroom for the University of Pittsburgh "Semester at Sea" program. Visit this site for more information about the program.
