Overview: the Kapitan Khlebnikov was built in 1981 by the Warsila Company, Finland - which in addition to being a builder of cruise ships is the world's leading builder of icebreakers. Not simply an ice-reinforced ship, the Kapitan Khlebnikov is a hard working icebreaker designed for the challenging conditions in the seas of northern Siberia. The Kapitan Khlebnikov has sailed to extremely remote corners of the globe with adventurous travelers since 1992 - no other expedition vessel has navigated more polar waters. It was the first ship ever to circumnavigate Antarctica with passengers in 1996-97.
She was recently refurbished to accommodate passengers in 56 outside cabins and suites, each with private facilities. Public areas on board include a lounge, lecture room, very small heated indoor pool, gym and sauna. There is a well-stocked polar library and modern medical facilities. There is a fair amount of deck space but weather conditions may limit the time you spend outside. The chefs are from Europe and the food and service on board are very good. The menu includes a variety of Russian dishes.
The bridge which offers a spectacular view of the surrounding areas is open to passengers 24-hours a day unless weather or navigation conditions prevail. The Kapitan Khlebnikov carries a fleet of inflatable Zodiacs and usually two helicopters for shore excursions and research expeditions.
