Alaska Marine Highway System

MV Malaspina

Your Rating:Three Stars

# previous cruises: 5
Date of Trip: May 27, 1999
Itinerary: Alaska-Inside Passage

Overview
Built in 1962-63 to provide ferry service to Southeast Alaska's island communities, the MALASPINA today operates the Alaska Marine Highway System's service from Juneau to Haines and Skagway on Lynn Canal.

Public Areas
The Malaspina came back from a Portland, Oregon, shipyard in May with a nice new lounge in the aft section of the cabin deck. Additionally, this area provides a play area for the kids and a video game area.On the Boat Deck, the forward lounge received new carpet and new seating. The outside decks were resurfaced with a non-skid deck coating, so walkers shouldn't fall when making the rounds outside, but don't run on it. The ship also has a television lounge and a glass-enclosed solarium on Bridge Deck.

Food and Service
On Boat Deck aft, the cafeteria is fairly nice, and serves good old fashioned, typical American fare, although Alaskan specials are served up on occasion. The cafeteria is self-service, but the food is always good on this ship.

Cabins
The ship has 74 cabins, including 32 "day rooms" which feature a seating area, table, and full facilities. The remaining cabins are mostly two-berth inside cabins, although the ship has a few other four-berth cabins and eight deluxe cabins which feature four berths and a separate siting area.

Entertainment
Entertainment varies and is usually offered by locals who travel on the Alaska ferries just like the rest of us. Additionally, the United States Forest Service has naturalists onboard the ships to provide lectures on the geography, history, and nature of Southeast Alaska.

Activities
For the summer of 1999, the Malaspina travels from Juneau to Haines and Skagway every day.

Who Goes
You will always run into nice people on the Malaspina. Many are from Southeast Alaska or Canada, although you will probably meet people from elsewhere on this ship as well.
