Date of Trip: February 26, 2001
Itinerary: Caribbean - Southern
I knew the Sunbird was the Song of America in her previous life with her tell tell signs of Royal Caribbean Crown half way up the funnel look. She is a beautiful looking ship on and off board, (better than the new bulk cruisers nowadays) she looks a lot better all in white and with out that fat blue band round her middle. She was constantly being cleaned and painted during our cruise. This was our first cruise ever and I can't wait go again.
The Lounges do look very 80's looking with the matt gold coloured hand rails everywhere. The worst lounge was the Can Can lounge which was the first lounge which were led to too for check in and my first impressions weren't good, It's covered in gold funny bubble lights and molded red and cream plastic panels. But the rest of the ship is beautiful, my two favorite areas were the Promenade deck and the Chart Room (aka the Viking Crown half way up the funnel)
The food was lovely, you didn't feel bloated or hungry afterwards just right, there was a wide selection for all kinds of tastes. The waiters were first class, they have this knack of clearing and setting your table without disturbing you. The wine waiters were first class as well if they didn't have it on the trolley they would search the ship high and low for you. I was very impressed.
We had a Standard Outside cabin with a porthole on Deck 2, as I said we'd never been on a cruise before, so we were expecting something very small and pokey, put we were surprised by the size of it, we never felt squashed in. The beds felt lovely and we never had a bad nights sleep. We were right at the front of the ship so you could hear the bow trusters starting up but you wouldn't arrive to the next port until 8.00am anyway and they were serving breakfast by then.
We went to the shows towards the end of the cruise, the main shows were very good while the others were a bit cheesey maybe this is because I'm only 27 and it geared up for me. In the evenings there was always something to do after dinner you go to the main show after that other one would be starting 10 mins later in other lounge and when that finished it was time for the midnight buffet, yummy.
We started at Barbados then on to St. Lucia, Grenada, La Guaira near Caracas (this was an alteration because our berth at Margarita was double booked!) Curacao, Aruba and then back to Barbados. We didn't go on the tours because we only wanted a relaxing holiday.
We went with a party of 6, My Mum and Dad, Sister, Brother in law, my wife and myself. But the other passengers were British, Canadian, American and Scandinavian.
