Itinerary: Mediterranean
Cruises have never appealed to me as they seemed full of stuffy, self-important people. It was my husband's 50th so he chose the holiday. The Sunbird was not at all like that. Food was marvellous, cabins a bit cramped, staff were excellent and made us feel as welcome as the next person. Shows, which I usually cringe at, were entertaining and quite adequate.
The pool, according to my 17 year old son and his friends, was rather salty. My husband and I didn't bother as we were too busy sightseeing in the daytime. Didn't bother with the casino. There was adequate walking space in the evening on the open deck.
As there were six of us we had a table to ourselves. If it was just the two of us I would prefer a more informal dining situation. The food was excellent and waiters were like part of the family, we could not fault them. There was a bit of a scramble for the midnight buffets, but I just hate queuing. If we wanted alternate dining we could go up on the open deck.
The cabin wardrobe and drawer space was adequate for our one week stay but might have needed a bit more space for two weeks. The shower was a bit cramped but one is not in it for long. It was generally quite.
We only really met the dining and cabin staff who were always cheerful (I don't know how they do it). The English crew didn't seem to go out of their way to converse. The entertainment was on the whole was very good.
We departed Majorca and sailed the next day so we just spent that day getting to know the ship as we had arrived late the previous night. Naples and Messina were our next two ports of call followed by Malta. Tunisia which we would not visit again due to being pestered at the souk where the vendors wouldn't let me buy what I wanted. Mahon was the last port and what a beautiful place it is.
Everyone socialised well but didn't intrude in our privacy. That suited me down to the ground as in past holidays we have been lumbered with the most irritating people who you just cannot get away from. The ship was a reasonable size to get lost on if you wanted to avoid someone like that. Otherwise, we met some very interesting people.
