Celebrity Cruise Line

GTS Summit

Your Rating:Three Stars

Date of Trip: May 21, 2004
Itinerary: Alaska

Overview
First and last cruise with Celebrity - there are much better on the market. No atmosphere on the ship. I chose the cruise for the itinerary. Wine prices in Restaurant are $25 min. bottle and over $6 for a glass [inc. 15%]. Don't be tempted by the June 2004 Cruise Travel Magazine review of Summit, clearly Georgina Cruz was well wined and dined by Celebrity as there isn't one disparaging remark.

Public Areas
Shows, Spa, Internet Room and lectures excellent. Furniture jaded and dining room seats stained and worn at edges. Dining Room decor is very dark and not impressive.

Food and Service
The food in the main dining room is very average and consisted of very small portions which were plated in the galley. Allow 2 hours for your meal as the waiter can only turn in whole table orders and dispense them course by course. Menus are "dogeared" and creased and clearly recycled every week based on the same output from the galley. The main alternative restaurant is now $30 per person and simply not worth it. The Lido deck /evening alternative restaurant is very good but the menu is limited and repeats every second night. The buffet is based on the line system unlike the Radiance class ships of RCL which have a superb island system.

Cabins
Our verandah cabin 7104 on Vista deck was a good size with plenty closet space. The en-suite washbasin hot and cold water was discoloured with a brown sediment. I reported it twice and during the second week of our 14 days, reception phoned to say the Engineers reply was that there was some iron in the pipes that they couldn't do anything about! Test it by running the water onto a white face cloth for 2/3 minutes.

Sadly the extractor fan in the en suite was not functional and mould growth was on the tiles and seams - not expected on a 4 year old ship. Shower size generous.

Entertainment
The shows and lectures on board were excellent.

Activities
Superb repositioning cruise itinerary and the main reason for going on Summit.

Who Goes
The cruise was a 55 year + cruise and there was a good mixture of older passengers.
