Itinerary: Caribbean - Southern

Overview
This review is placed here because I see no recent reviewas of the Destiny. My experience of the Destiny in 2002 is that it is no where near the ship it was when introduced. The May 19th sailing from San Juan was a disaster from the start. The embarkation was a joke. We were forced to wait on the sidewalk for over two hours in the hot sun, the food was cafeteria tasting and service had been greatly reduced due to the fact that Carnival now charges your tips before sailing onto your sign and sail card. There is no incentive to provide better service and I think that Carnival has no incentive to change its policies as long as patrons are willing to expect less or believe this is as good as it gets. The fact that the ship was in disrepair was evident from the lack of varnish to the scratches on the inside of the elevator doors to the sliding doors not operating to the worst of all BEING ADRIFT AT SEA WITHOUT POWER for 8 hours. The company felt that the change in itinerary as well as the "inconvenience" of being adrift was worth a $50 credit. I personally took this as an insult. The food was bland except for the pizza and the captain seems to feel that public relations are beneath (spelling?) him. He never did offer a personal explanation to us. The islands are of course beautiful despite the ships inadequacy, so, why not see them from a better product than this ship offers? Public Areas
Lido deck is well laid out however the signs posted that some whirlpools are for adults only is ignored by both staff and parents. There was no real outside promenade, just dead ends on deck 3 only. Best hide outs, decks 6&7 in the front. not common knowledge these are here.

Food and Service
Food was bland and tasteless except pizza. Lobster was like rubber. Service suffers due to the fact that Carnival pre-charges the tips, thus no need to make extra effort.

Cabins
Cabins are well sized (I was inside 7135). two full closets a third w/shelves and 3 drawer desk. small cabinet w/safe also. good shower size but the noise is too much. people on deck one heard the crewas galley all night and I on the 7th floor was awakened by the lounge noise on the 3rd-4th.

Entertainment
The cruise staff was lousy. The cruise director was a wanna be comedian in my opinion he should have been taking care of his guests.

Activities The health club seemed state of the art and well cared for. the islands visited were St.Thomas (not much here)Martinique, expensive shopping but good snorkeling, Barbados(great island) and an unexpected stop in St. Lucia (stole my heart). We were supposed to go to Aruba but could not due to the ship leaving us adrift for 8 hours without power.
