This was my first cruise, and I enjoyed it very much! carnival is a great company to travel with, I think this boat was good for price I paid which was under $650.00 per person, I also thought this was a good beginner boat. One big minus of this ship, as of January of 2001, the ships stabilizers are broken and the ship rocks quite a bit, in fact I got motion sickness my first night on, and was hard to walk anywhere! also seemed to have a power problem one day everything was shorting out for a few hours, then on New Years morning at about 5 a.m. the whole ship went dead, no power, no water, no movement and the ship was just floating like a bobber in the water, and since it was new years eve a few hours before, no staff or maintenance people got up and fixed it right away it took about half an hour, good thing most people were sleeping or else lots of panicking would have been the case!
I felt there were plenty of public areas, not that comfy but come on this was built in 1986 it was nice just not a lot of padding. I thought the Atlantis Lounge was nice in the balcony section. the casino was nice and big I felt, the pools were small, and didn't like the fact that they filled them with saltwater versus fresh. the hot tubs were nice and in a secluded area for more privacy. If I remember correctly the promenade deck was not a walk around, you had to go up one more to the Lido deck, there were 11 decks total, I was surprised that there wasn't more of an outside deck walking area wrapping around the ship.
The food was good, I felt spoiled, I was assigned to dine in the Bouderaux Room, my waiters were excellent, I must say it was my favorite part of the evening. and I felt like there was always a big assortment of food. the Lido deck is the buffet floor, and they have a big time slot for all meals. plus they have the midnight buffet!
I felt the cabins were very nice, I was on the Empress deck in the middle section cabin 133 (no window). The only thing to complain about was that apparently there was an employee work area about my room and there was extremely loud pounding noises most of the night starting from around midnight to about 3 a.m. it was bothersome. the bathrooms were nice and easy to maneuver in. the showers were decent size for one full size adult.
The entertainment was very nice I went to a show every night in the atlantis lounge following dinner, and I liked it very much although the seating wasn't very comfortable for a 2 hour show. I would rate the cruise staff a 8 out of 10.
Well I did quite a few activities on the ship such as bingo and other activities, one thing I noticed, they were always running behind, and we had big problems getting the gangplank out at Cozumel because the ship was leaning so bad to one side, we were an hour late getting off the ship to our excursion.
I felt most people I would bump into were not very polite, but some were nice and talkative, but I didn't care cause I went on this cruise with a party of 12 so I was always busy! I will say this in another couple years I am definitely going on a carnival cruise again I had that much fun! this time though I will choose a newer ship.
