Itinerary: Baltic/Black Sea/Russia
I would not recommend a Baltic cruise on this line. Based in
Genoa, Italy, 75% of the passengers are Italian who seem to be first time
cruisers. A certain amount of 'regimentation' is necessary on a ship. Rules
and queues are ignored.Princess, Royal Carib. or Norwegian are preferred.
Public areas were refurbished although very crowded and
noisy. My discovery of a quiet area at the disco bar, closed during the
day,was short-lived following a party for Italians. Too many children were
allowed to run around the casino and other areas.
The food, except pastas, was very bad. We gave up on the
buffet, early on. Too much elbowing and seat grabbing. The service was
excellent, although very few spoke basic English they tried so hard to
please.Appetisers were good, entrees very poor in quality and desserts were
ordinary.
Cabins were spacious and clean. The removable shower was a plumber's
delight. Either scalding or freezing. 3 attempts to fix it and so it was
fast in and out ! There were frequent requests (in Italian) for quiet while
walking the cabin corridors.
The entertainment was good. We were at the theatre room every
night there was a show. The early sitting people remained for the second
show but soon left.
The activities are varied but announcements are made in 4
languages which is time consuming. Italian, French, German and English last.
By then the Italians resumed their conversations obliterating
announcements. Two days in St.petersburg was cut to one due to weather and
our holed up in Ronne.Stockholm, Helsinki, Copenhagen and Visby were good.
As stated, Italian retirees and their children. A few French and
Germans. About 75 U.S. and about 40 Brits. The reception people were
inexperienced, frequently flustered and spoke almost no English. We just
made the best of a poor choice of cruise line.
