GlobalQuest Cruises

MV Terra Australis

Your Rating:Four Stars
Reviewed by:Bob Marsden
# previous cruises: 1
Date of Trip: January 11, 2001
Itinerary: South America

Overview
The ship is spacious enough to be comfortable and yet small enough to enter fjords and shallower waters of the Magellan Straits and the Beagle Channel. Several excursions to glaciers and to view the abundant wildlife. The crew is 100% Chilean and very friendly and accommodating. The food was very good and the Chilean wines were above average.

Public Areas
The Magellan Lounge and the upper deck Sky Lounge provided lots of windows through which to view the spectacular scenery. The furnishings were comfortable and the decor reflected the history of Patagonia.

Food and Service
The food was well above average, though not 5 stars. Variety was evident with an emphasis on Chilean cuisine, i.e, lamb, fish. Wine at lunch and dinner was included in the cost of the cruise. Two bars on board with reasonably priced cocktails. Try the Pisco Sours.

Cabins
The cabins were approximately 8' x 8' with a small coset and a reasonably sized bathroom with shower. The shower fits a large size person. The cabins seemed well insulated and noise was not a problem.

Entertainment
This is not your typical mega liner. This is a small specialized ship without a theatre or live entertainment. The scenery and the excursions through Patagonia are the entertainment. The crew did provide a culinary demonstration, cocktail demonstration and daily seminars on the the history and geography of our travel area.

Activities
Excursions ashore to see sea lions, Magellan penguins, elephant seals, birds too numerous to mention. Ports of call included: Ushuaia, Argentina; Porto Williams, Chile; Punta Arenas, Chile; Porvenir, Chile; Yendegaia Bay.

Who Goes
The passengers were a delight - intelligent, inquisitive and fun to be with. Our trip was Jan. 11, 2001 - January 19, 2001.
