Itinerary: Alaska-Inside Passage
The scenery alone is worth the trip - whatever ship you choose.
The public areas are beautifully decorated, with artwork and flowers everywhere. The two-level Rotterdam dining room is lovely, and comfortable. However, the lower level, on the Promenade Deck, is separated from the rest of that deck by the Galleys, which made access difficult; most passengers I spoke with were constantly confused as to how to get there! The two-level atrium is also beautiful. The Frans Hals Lounge show room was large and comfortable, with excellent sight lines. All the lounges and bars were well situated and comfortable.
The food was fair to good in all the restaurants, including the premium Marco Polo. The main restaurant service was hurried and unfriendly, and the portions were small. The Lido buffet was good - not great. I can't say there was one memorable meal during the entire seven-day cruise.
Here's where the Volendam shines. Our Veranda Suite was beautiful, comfortable, and spacious. The closet space was so plentiful that we were able to stow all our clothes and suitcases. The pillow-topped mattress, duvet, and pillows made for a wonderful sleep. The private veranda allowed us to go directly from bed to see Tracy Arm and its glacier.
We attended several shows - notably an energetic broadway review and two different magic shows - lots of fun.
The pools onboard were very spacious and nice, and since it was Alaska, not crowded. We stopped in Skagway, Ketchikan, and Juneau. We opted to do little sightseeing, preferring to explore the towns (and Jewelry stores) and get the local flavor. We did take a Duck (Amphibian) tour of Ketchikan, and it was well worth it.
Most of the passengers were in their fifties and over. We did meet a few grandparents who brought their grandchildren along; saw very few younger families.
