Itinerary: Caribbean - Eastern
My travel companion and I embarked on Norway's New Year's Eve cruise, the seven-day Eastern Caribbean voyage out of Miami, on December 29th, 2002. Shortly after returning to port on January 5th, we both experienced symptoms that required a trip via ambulance to HEALTHSOUTH Doctor's Hospital in Miami and a three-night stay with medical attention. The symptoms we suffered, matching those of the "Norwalk Virus," caused a major delay in our departure, complications with the airlines, unscheduled leave from work and unforeseen expenditures.
The doctors who admitted us believed that our conditions resulted from our trip to sea aboard the Norway. We also learned, upon our return, that the long lines in the medical center on board were due to other "Norwalk" victims.
NCL also lost one of our suitcases, still not recovered, as of January 13. In addition, the crew had to turn the water off on our cabin floor one evening, due to a "leak." So... we were unable to use the shower or brush our teeth.
The food was average, but I would recommend Carnival or Royal Caribbean over NCL. The public areas and decor was somewhat outdated, but very clean.
Our cabin on-board was not an enjoyable place to stay. It was the length of one twin bed and while sitting on the bed, you could touch the wall across you with your feet. There wasn't enough room for luggage and personal belongings.
The excursions were the best part of the trip, although lines to disembark were lengthy (up to 2 hours) because we had to take tenders to and from shore.
My stomach virus prevented me from taking some of the tours.
Didn't get to meet too many due to the illness.
