Itinerary: Caribbean - Western
Built in 1996 in Finland, the Grandeur of the Seas is one of the six near sisters cruise ships of the so called very successful Vision Class.
Her interiors are quite elegant, with a good mix of light contemporary style and classic european touches. There is a wide range of public lounges, but the most interesting place is the nautical themed Schooner Bar. The casino is very large and always crowded. There is a full wrap around promenade, with many plastic chairs: this is the right place for strolling or for reading a good book while looking at the sea.
The food was really very good, both in quality, quantity and choice. Even the pasta was quite good, not overcooked and with tasty sauces. The dinner in the main restaurant were themed: italian, international, french, oriental. The buffet offered a superb choice of hot and cold dishes. The service was warm and attentive, even if a little bit robotic.
The cabins are of a very good size. I was in a large outside one on deck three. There was a large panoramic window and a small sitting area with a love seas and a table. While there was an abundance of large drawers, the closet space was quite limited for two persons, and it wasn't possible to store two medium sized suit cases under the beds. The soundproof was so so.
The weak point of the cruise. In the theater most performances were frankly boring. Most events, as the tropical party on the pool deck were simply ignored by the majority of the passengers.
There were two large pools, 6 jacuzzis, a very good gym, large sauna and steam bath, rock climbing wall. The jogging track on one of the uppermost decks needed more maintenance. The outside decks literally flooded when it rained.
During the summer season 2006 Grandeur of the Seas performed two different itineraries round trip from Baltimore, one to the Bermuda, the other to the Western Caribbean. During my cruise to the Western Caribbean there were three calls in Florida (Miami, Key West and Port Canaveral), frankly too much for my tastes. Why not go to the Bahamas as originally planned by RCCL ?
Mostly of the passengers were from the East Coast of the USA (Baltimore and Maryland areas, Washington DC area, Virginia and New Jersey), others came from California (mostly from the Los Angeles area). I have met many new friends onboard, and frankly I would stay in touch with them.
