Regal Cruise Line

MS Regal Empress

Your Rating:Three Stars

Date of Trip: December 17, 2000
Itinerary: Mexico-Eastern

Overview
The Regal Empress is a fine ship that offers a piece of history in addition to an enjoyable cruise. The food in the dining room was great (beware of on deck offerings), the ports of call (Progresso & Cozumel) were lots of fun, and the crew could not have been more attentive. The budget conscious traveller is getting far more than paid for when choosing Regal Cruises and the Regal Empress.

Public Areas
The public areas are where the old Olympia (now Regal Empress) struts her stuff. There aren't many places where you can get a true feel of days gone bye, but this is one. The rich wood panelling and deco designs harken back to days that are long gone. Be sure to check out the small but richly detailed library.

Food and Service
The food in the dining room was excellent. The overall quality far exceeded what would be expected in such a low priced cruise. On the other hand, except for the fresh morning coffee and donuts, don't bother with the offerings on deck.

Cabins
The cabins, perhaps, are where the old lady shows her age. The one we occupied was in need of updating. In spite of that need, it was functional and comfortable.

Entertainment
We are not to into shows, so we did not attend.

Activities
Ports of call were Progresso and Cozumel on this 5 day cruise. Progresso is not a place for tourism. It is simply a jumping off point for Mayan sites. The advantage is that it is a 1 1/2 hour drive from Progresso to Chitzenitza as opposed to 4 hours plus from any other port.

Who Goes
Here's the breakdown.... 60% seniors, 25% 20 somethings, 15% all others in between. You won't find any stuffed shirts on this budget line, but you will find regular folks, just like yourself. And yes, except for a few crotchety seniors who would find reason to bitch about anything, I'd be proud to have 'em over
