Renaissance Cruises

MS R Two

Your Rating:Three Stars

Date of Trip: March 3, 1999
Itinerary: Mediterranean

Overview
The ship is beautiful, not glitzy, but full of incongruities. For instance it has elegant public areas and rooms but the flowers in the vases are plastic and dusty. The Mediterranean cruise stops mostly in Spanish ports, but there is only one Spanish wine listed on the wine list.

Public Areas
The library is the best public area. The casino is almost a pass-through area. I guess this helps bring more people into the casino. The pool area is good, but on a particularly nice day, it was impossible to find a place to sit.

Food and Service
The food was very good. However, the open seating is a pain. One has to either make reservations at one of the two restaurants that maintain the same menu throughout the cruise, wait to be seated at the main dinning room, or hustle to find a place at the buffet area. Service is spotty. Some waiters are very good, some need MAJOR attitude adjustments. The maitre'ds are full of their own importance (control?)! Because we never had the same waiter more than once, tipping was difficult. It was very impersonal and definitely not a strength on this cruise. A more varied wine list is needed - more Spanish wine!

Cabins
The cabins are very nice, quiet, and provide plenty of storage space in a very organized manner.

Entertainment
The shows are geared to an "older crowd" and do not provide a whole lot of variety. The quality and helpfulness of the cruise staff varied from totally disinterested except in each other to friendly. Not a strength.

Activities
The itinerary (Lisbon, Cadiz, Tangier, Casablanca, Gibraltar, Malaga, Almeria, Palma de Mallorace, Menorca, and Barcelona) was very good. We made our own arrangements (renting a car or taking a guide and/or taxi) rather than participate in tours. Casablanca was the only stop that we could have skipped.

Who Goes
Most of the passengers were older (65 and beyond). There was little diversity among the passengers.
