Itinerary: Mediterranean
We booked late and paid less than half brochure price but found that rather than an awesome bargain we more or less got what we paid for in terms of the on-board experience, which had a slightly 'holiday camp' feel.
The lasting impression is one of good value for the price we paid but not worth anywhere near full price.
Most areas were adequate. A sunbed anywhere near the pool was often a challenge but not impossible. The Sky bar was not as good as I imagined, with dirty windows for the duration. It was disappointing that the Plasma TVs in Blake's bar were almost never used.
Food selection was marvellous particularly the Lido Cafe. The Seven Seas Restaurant was a little bit pretentious given that their food was often only average quality. Juice was only available at breakfast.
The 24 hr coffee was lovely but the tap water dispensed in the cafe tasted of chlorine. We bought the bottled water supplied to the cabin but, irritatingly and almost predictably, the steward tried to charge us for more bottles than we had been supplied with. This was the only real gripe about housekeeping.
Our outside cabin on level 2 had plenty of wardrobe space & hangers, minimal bathroom space particularly in the surprisingly powerful shower. Adjustable Air-Con was an unexpected bonus. Overall fairly noisy by hotel standards but we were not often disturbed.
There was only one show in which we were remotely interested; called 'Lots of Latino'. This turned out to be more like 'Lots of Manilow'. Some of the performers were sufficient eye-candy to make it watchable in places. If you don't like cabarets, karaoke, game shows or bingo, there's not a great deal else to see.
'Jewels of the Mediterranean' was a fantastic itinerary and each port of call was impressive and memorable in it's own way. The pool was sea water which was surprisingly clear although quite chilly upon entry.
We never once saw anyone else using the adult pool!
Average age must have been well into the sixties. In our early thirties, we must surely have been the youngest paying passengers (i.e: not with Parents). We felt like we'd gone on a SAGA holiday by mistake!
